Job summary

University of California - San Francisco is seeking a Lifeguard to support the Aquatics unit at our UCSF facilities. You will ensure patron safety, assist in emergencies, and maintain pool areas across sites.

Responsibilities include supervising pool areas, performing first aid, completing records, and coordinating with other lifeguards and staff. Must hold Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED and related certifications, with high school diploma or GED.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• American Red Cross Advanced Life Saving certificate required.
• Water Safety Instructor certificate required.
• Current CPR certificate required.
• Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate active or obtained by start date.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
• Preferred: ARC First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) active or within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Oversee patrons in assigned pool areas.
• Assist patrons in distress; administer first aid if necessary.
• Perform light cleaning and maintenance duties.
• Attend staff meetings, trainings & in-services.
• Prevent accidents and minimize hazardous situations.
• Respond quickly to emergencies in the facility.
• Communicate with lifeguards and aquatic staff for assistance.
• Maintain records, reports, timecards on time.
• Follow department policies.
• Observe and enforce facility policies fairly and courteously.
• Maintain professional appearance and punctuality for shifts.
• Ensure emergency equipment is ready before shift.
• Assist other staff during emergencies.
• Maintain current certifications.
• Assist in finding substitutes 48 hours prior to shifts.
• Notify supervisor of availability changes two weeks prior.
• Mentor new staff and volunteers.
• Maintain open communication with supervisor and staff.
• Pass lifeguard in-service swim test when required.
• Carry out additional duties from the Aquatics Manager.

The Lifeguard works under direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager and is responsible for carrying out the day‑to‑day operations of the Aquatics unit, which includes customer service, patron safety, pool maintenance, emergency procedures/evacuations, and daily safety checks of the swimming pools and surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee patrons in assigned areas of the pool and pool area.
• Assist patrons in distress; administer first aid if necessary.
• Perform light cleaning and maintenance duties.
• Attend staff meetings, trainings & in‑services.
• Prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.
• Respond quickly to all emergency situations in and around the facility.
• Communicate with other lifeguards and aquatic staff when additional assistance or equipment is needed.
• Maintain and complete all records, reports, paperwork and timecards on time.
• Be knowledgeable of and follow department policies.
• Observe and enforce facility policies fairly, consistently, and courteously.
• Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
• Arrive on time for shifts, in uniform, and ready to guard.
• Ensure emergency equipment is available and in working condition before the start of each shift.
• Assist other lifeguards and UCSF staff during emergencies.
• Maintain required current certifications.
• Assist in finding a qualified substitute at least 48 hours prior to their shift.
• Notify supervisor of changes in availability at least two weeks prior to the change.
• Assist with mentoring new staff and volunteers.
• Maintain communication with supervisor and staff in an open and timely manner.
• Pass the lifeguard in‑service swim test at any time.
• Carry out all additional duties assigned by the Aquatics Manager.

Required Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma.
• Possession of an American Red Cross Advanced Life Saving Certificate.
• Possession of a Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate.
• Possession of a current Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate.
• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate (active or obtained by start date).

Preferred Qualifications

• American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) (active or obtained within 1 year of hire).
