Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 15 years.
  • Current nationally recognized lifeguard certifications required (American Red Cross, YMCA, ILTP Ellis, Starguard, Boy Scouts of America).
  • CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and O2 certifications required (O2 within 30 days if not held).
  • Professional image and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and perform rescues and first aid.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of facility patrons.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Enforce all facility policies, rules and regulations.
  • Answer patron inquiries and provide branch information.
  • Inspect the aquatic facility daily and report unsafe conditions.
  • Complete attendance, water chemistry, and incident reports.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Aquatics Director or Head Lifeguard and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the lifeguard is responsible for supervision of swimmers during recreational and fitness swims; administers First Aid, exercises control of the swimmers and maintains all safety and sanitation procedures according to the policies of the Upper Palmetto Aquatics Department and State Swimming Pool Operations Codes. The Lifeguard will assist the Aquatic Director with various branch activities such as special events and other activities that occur on various occasions.

  • Responsible for the safety of facility patrons
  • Maintains a constant surveillance of the pool area
  • Enforces all of the facility’s policies, rules and regulations
  • Responds to patron inquiries and concerns as well as provides branch information as needed
  • Inspects the aquatic facility on a daily schedule and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to supervisor.
  • Completes records and reports regarding the following:
    • Patron attendance
    • Water chemistry
    • Incidents and accidents
  • Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff
  • Participates in all staff meetings and in-service trainings
  • Conducts aquatic facility maintenance as assigned
  • Maintains a safe, clean, well-supervised pool area that welcomes participation
  • Team work is promoted and demonstrated
  • Communicates aquatics programs, rules and regulations
  • Other duties as needed
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 15years old
  • Must have a current nationally recognized Lifeguard Certifications to include: AmericanRed Cross, YMCA, ILTP Ellis, Starguard, and Boy Scouts of American LifeguardingCertification. If not American Red Cross Lifeguard Certified, must complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard course in the first 120 days of employment.
  • Current certification in the following:
    • Professional CPR
    • First Aid
    • Bloodborne Pathogens
    • O2 (If you do not currently have this certification, must obtain within 30 days of hire or at first available training)
  • Must present a professional, mature image, and have excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must have a positive attitude and desire to achieve the mission of the Upper Palmetto YMCA.
  • Walking, carrying, sitting, seeing, hearing, crouching, lifting (25 pounds), pushing, kneeling, standing and speaking
  • Must be able to accomplish the following
  • Remaining alert, with no lapses of consciousness
  • Sit for extended periods including in an elevated chair
  • Communicate with others immediately when responding to an emergency
  • Hear noises and distress signals
  • Observe all assigned areas of the pool or water park
  • Perform all needed rescues, resuscitation and survival skills
  • Think in abstract, solve problems, make quick decisions
