Job Description

Lifeguard II/Water Safety Instructor

INTERVIEWS WILL BEGIN THE 1ST WEEK OF APRIL!

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Manager, teach water safety courses, including Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety, Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, and the Learn-to-Swim Aquatics program. Serve as a Lifeguard, monitoring all swimming activities to ensure the safety of patrons. This includes preventing and responding to emergencies and providing general assistance to patrons. To prioritize the safety of patrons and ensure proper response during emergencies, it is mandatory for all aquatics staff to attend all trainings and ongoing in-services.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  1. Design and develop swim lesson plans that are effective and safe.
  2. Collaborate with students to determine their needs and concerns, and tailor the program to meet those needs.
  3. Observe and evaluate student swimming skills, accurately classify them, and recommend appropriate interventions to improve their skills.
  4. Communicate effectively and provide feedback to students and their parents/guardians on their progress in swim lessons.
  5. Adapt teaching strategies to address unexpected challenges and disruptive behavior from students.
  6. Accommodate participants with disabilities and other health conditions as needed.
  7. Monitor class participation and maintain accurate attendance records.
  8. Complete all necessary documentation and records in a timely and accurate manner.
  9. Provide YWCA course certificates or other recognition to participants upon completion of the program.
  10. Maintain constant vigilance over patrons in the facility and respond immediately and appropriately in the event of an emergency.
  11. Provide emergency care and treatment as necessary and according to training until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  12. Maintain the safety and operation of the aquatics facility on a daily basis.
  13. Maintain all instructional and fitness equipment used in the program.
  14. Perform any additional duties as required.

Job Qualifications

  1. Understand and support the YWCA's mission, vision, and policies, without compromising the goals of the organization. Serving as a role model for the Lubbock community both in demeanor and in lifestyle habits.
  2. Must be at least 16 years old.
  3. Possession of a Water Safety Instructor certification or the ability to obtain one within 30 days.
  4. Possession of Lifeguard certification or the ability to obtain one within 30 days.
  5. Proficient in swim technique.
  6. Willingness to attend and work special events or projects for the YWCA and represent the YWCA in community groups and activities.
  7. Possession of exceptional customer service skills.
  8. Ability to present oneself professionally in appearance and mannerism at all times.
  9. Flexibility to work irregular hours from time to time, including evenings or weekends.
  10. Infrequent travel (0-10 days/year).
  11. Pass a criminal history background check and FBI fingerprint check.
  12. Ability to relate well with a variety of populations.

  3. Work in a public swimming pool for at least one (1) hour at a time.
