The Eugene Family YMCA is hiring a Lifeguard / Group Swim Instructor in Eugene, Oregon. This role combines lifeguard duties with leading swim lessons and program support, requiring strong safety awareness and effective communication with members and families.

Qualified candidates hold current lifeguard, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, and must maintain readiness. This is a part-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Aquatics Director.

Qualifications

  • Lifeguard certification required (YMCA/Red Cross or equivalent).
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications must be current.
  • Must maintain certification-level physical readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains active surveillance of pool area and enforces safety rules.
  • Instructs group swimming lessons per YMCA guidelines when assigned.
  • Keeps records (attendance, progress reports) as required.

Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the Y community.Essential FunctionsLifeguard DutiesMaintains active surveillance of the pool areaKnows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports as requiredKnows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areasPerforms equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as neededChecks the pool for hazardous conditions when arrivingIdentifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participantsAttends all staff meetings and in-service trainingsGroup Swim InstructionInstructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goalsDevelops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; encourages parent or caregiver involvementConveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programsMaintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports)Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, completes incident and accident reports as necessaryOrganizes and puts away needed class equipment, reports damaged equipmentTrains and supervises class aides as assignedComplete all required trainings as assigned by supervisor, by scheduled due dateIf required to drive while on duty (either your own vehicle or a Y-owned vehicle), must maintain a current, valid Oregon driver’s license, a DMV driving record that meets YMCA standards, and evidence of insurability throughout entire term of employmentOther duties as assignedQualificationsMinimum age of 15Required Current Certifications: Professional Rescuer CPR/AED, First AidCurrent Red Cross Lifeguard or YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalentAbility to maintain certification-level physical and mental readinessMust demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with Eugene Family YMCA standardsWork Environment & Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
