University of Chester is seeking a Lifeguard/ Fitness Facilities Attendant for a hybrid role at the Exton Park Campus. You will cover mornings, evenings and weekends, with shifts up to 5 hours and a total of 15 hours per week, under the supervision of the Fitness Facilities Co-ordinator.

You will supervise pool sessions, maintain safety and cleanliness, and perform related facility duties including reception, checks, and staff coordination.

Job description

This is a hybrid role combining Lifeguard and Fitness Facilities Attendant. The successful candidate will be required to work shifts of up to 5 hours (15 hours max per week) across a full week comprising of mornings, evenings and weekends as determined by the Fitness Facilities Coordinator.

The Lifeguards/Attendants are based in the University swimming pool and sports facilities, situated at the Exton Park Campus, and are line managed by the Fitness Facilities Co-ordinator (FFC).

The Lifeguard is responsible for the safe and effective running of all University swimming sessions. The Lifeguard must ensure that swimming pool users act in an appropriate manner and that the swimming pool is clean and safe for use. The Lifeguard must supervise swimming pool sessions whenever there are people either on poolside or in the swimming pool.

In addition to Lifeguard duties, you will also be required to complete tasks associated with the Fitness Facilities Attendant role. This will include: reception duties, reporting maintenance issues, cleaning, facility checks, head counts, opening and closing of facilities, movement and set-up of equipment and health and safety checks of sports facilities/equipment.

KEY DUTIES:
  • The Lifeguard/Attendant must effectively and clearly communicate with clients and users of the fitness facilities.
  • Effectively, clearly and competently advise and instruct clients and users regarding the correct, safe and effective use of the swimming pool and associated equipment.
Leadership and Working Collaboratively
  • The Lifeguard/Attendant will work within a close team environment and it is expected that all Lifeguards/Attendants assist each other in the completion of daily tasks and delivery/development of facilities and services.
  • Ensure a harmonious and friendly atmosphere across all sports facilities.
  • Maintain high standards of service and Health and Safety.
Liaison and Networking
  • The Lifeguard/Attendant will be expected to liaise with various members of University staff and represent the department accordingly.
  • The Lifeguard/Attendant must attend regular meetings with the FFC throughout their contract of work.
Delivering a High-Quality Standard of Service
  • To ensure all pool-based and sport activities are appropriate and undertaken under instruction and supervision where necessary.
  • To ensure members and users are treated in a professional and friendly manner and help in the smooth running of the wider Fitness Suite and sports facilities.
  • Be prepared to cover staffing whenever possible for fellow staff members.
  • To ensure that all activity undertaken in the swimming pool and sports facilities are appropriate and safe in accordance with the University normal operating procedures and national guidelines.
  • Ensure customer confidentiality.
  • Keep up to date with all department developments, news and procedures and attend all staff meetings (where requested).
  • Where appropriately qualified and experienced, cover any other duties in the department as designated by the Line Manager.
  • The Lifeguard/Attendant will be required to complete mandatory staff development sessions and monthly RLSS/NPLQ training in order to maintain an up to date qualification
  • The Lifeguard/Attendant will be required to wear staff uniform and lanyard in an appropriate manner at all times whilst at work.
  • To make independent decisions regarding the supervision of users in accordance with good practice and Health and Safety.
Planning and Organising Self and Others
  • The Lifeguard/Attendant has no direct responsibility for planning and organising resources but must assist the department in ensuring efficiency of service and effective service development.
Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving)
  • Will be expected to take initial decisions regarding issues of facility use and solve possible minor issues, customer feedback and complaints.
  • Work with and inform the SDC regarding any problems.
Sensory and Physical Demands
  • The role holder will be required to perform physical exercise in the daily duties of a Lifeguard/Attendant and in the continuing training, therefore the role holder must possess and maintain a good level of physical fitness in order to fulfil the requirements of the standard NPLQ qualification.
  • The role holder will be required to perform all physical activities expected of a Lifeguard/Attendant.
  • The role holder will be required to physically handle large pieces of equipment.
  • The role holder will be expected to assist with the cleaning of the pool area and sports facilities
  • The role holder will normally work within a stable environment in the Fitness Suite and outdoor facilities. The role holder is expected to ensure Health and Safety compliance within all areas of work.
  • The role holder will be, from time to time, expected to act as a mentor to new incoming members of staff, and thus be expected to act as a role-model of professionalism and good practice.
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with your grade, and/or hours of work, as may reasonably be required of you.
