Job summary

The City of Whitewater is hiring Lifeguards responsible for ensuring the safety of pool patrons through effective surveillance and rule enforcement. Applicants must be certified in lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid, and be prepared to respond to emergencies while maintaining a professional demeanor. The position requires effective communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team in a high heat and humidity environment.

Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, AED certification required or willing to obtain.
  • Skill in providing necessary emergency care.

Job description

Lifeguards are responsible for guarding the lives of pool patrons through effective pool surveillance, scanning, rule enforcement and responding to emergencies. The Lifeguard works and communicates with other WAFC employees, professional staff, pool patrons, and the general public.

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary.

  • Maintains a presence with proper apparel and equipment.
  • Provides for safety of the public by maintaining an alert and ready position while scanning and is prepared to act in an emergency
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in identified zones.
  • Understands and able to demonstrate proper water safety principles.
  • Provides necessary emergency response care and treatment.
  • Follows proper Lifeguard change procedures.
  • Enforces rules in a polite, firm, consistent manner
  • Follows and enforces the policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatics Manual.
  • Has knowledge of the emergency action plan.
  • Provides necessary saves, first aid and/or CPR and AED use according to established procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reports issues to Head Guard, and assists in documenting issues.
  • Logs appropriate training and in-service hours
  • Reports hazards or issues to Head Guard/Aquatics Coordinator
  • Assists with maintenance, cleaning and general care of facility, pool deck and equipment.
  • Ensures COVID-19 prevention and safety protocols are followed, including, but not limited to, sanitizing equipment, social distancing, and mask wearing as required.
  • Assists with pool activities and concession stand when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, AED certification required and/or willing to obtain.
  • Knowledge of water safety principles.
  • Skill in providing necessary emergency care.

Language Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form and to follow verbal and written instructions.

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, department professionals, staff, customers and the general public.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to understand, follow and perform duties as required of emergency action plan and to swim 500 yards.
  • Maintain a positive behavior and professional demeanor at all times; address resident and customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.

  • Must have the physical ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.

  • See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The employee must exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, occasionally involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, crouching, crawling, kneeling, stooping and or moving up to 50 pounds.
