Job summary

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties in Tacoma, WA is hiring a part-time lifeguard for our downtown Tacoma center. You will monitor pool safety, teach youth swimming, and respond to emergencies following YMCA protocols.

Candidates should maintain lifeguard readiness, possess CPR for the Professional Rescuer credentials and First Aid training, and be prepared for background checks. Join a mission-driven team focused on community safety and engagement.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16 years or older.
• Six months or more aquatics experience (preferred).
• Current Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications (preferred).
• Must pass Background and Reference checks per WA State Fair Chance Act.
• Willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on day one.

Responsibilities

• Ensure member safety by scanning water and deck, enforcing rules, and following YMCA procedures.
• Instruct swimming lessons in basic and advanced stroke skills to youth members.
• Perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR as required.
• Prepare class lesson plans with progression for ages and abilities.
• Know and apply safety rules for pool and aquatic areas.
• Attend monthly/quarterly/annual training and certification courses.
• Maintain positive relationships with members, participants and staff.

Job description

Wage: $18.00 to $18.50 per hour (Compensation is determined based on relevant experience, skills, and qualifications, with most new hires starting between the minimum and midpoint of the posted wage range)

Hours: Part-Time, Up to 25 hours per week

Location: Tacoma Center YMCA (Downtown Tacoma), Tacoma, WA

Join the aquatics team at our adult-only facility in downtown Tacoma, serving members ages 15 and older. As a one-guard pool, lifeguards must be attentive, dependable, and confident working independently while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. If hired for this position, you will also be responsible for promoting member engagement and safety by maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 16 years or older.
• Six months or more of related Aquatics experience (preferred).
• Current Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications (preferred).
• Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).
• Committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
• Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day, and other online and in-person training as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Always ensuring the safety of our members by vigilantly scanning the water and pool deck areas, monitoring activities, identifying safety issues and concerns, enforcing rules, and following YMCA emergency procedures and protocols.
• Instructing swimming lessons in basic and advanced stroke skills to youth members.
• Performing necessary rescue actions, administering first aid and CPR in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completing related reports as required.
• Preparing class lesson plans with a natural progression of appropriate skills for the abilities and ages of the classes.
• Knowing, understanding, consistently communicating, and applying safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas.
• Attending monthly, quarterly, and/or annual training and certification courses.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
