Job summary

USC Upstate is seeking a student employee to serve as Lifeguard within the UPS Campus Recreation department. The role requires guarding pool facilities, enforcing safety rules, and supporting aquatic programs and events.

Flexible evenings and weekends may be required. The candidate must be enrolled at USC Upstate, complete required Spartan Rec Center training, and hold a current ARC Lifeguard certification with the ability to recertify as needed.

Qualifications

• Current Lifeguard Training (ARC only) certification required.
• Must pass screening tests of basic lifeguarding skills and knowledge.
• Prerequisite swimming test must be passed during interview process.

Responsibilities

• Enforce safety regulations for pool patrons under supervision of Aquatics Director/Head Lifeguard.
• Lead lifeguarding programs including recreational swimming, classes, swim team and club activities.
• Attend staff or university employee trainings as assigned; participate in certification/recertification as needed.
• Assist in general maintenance and upkeep of the facility.

Average work week is 10 hours. Weekly scheduled to be determined and will vary, but student employee must be able to work flexible hours to include some evenings and weekends

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and/or Head Lifeguard. Enforce safety regulations for the protection of pool patrons; make suggestions for new or updated regulations; assist in general maintenance and perform other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director.

• Responsible for lifeguarding programs at the facility including but not limited to recreational swimming, academic classes, swim team, swim club and rec programs
• Attend staff, departmental, or university employee training as assigned
• Attend certification or re-certification programs as needed to meet the minimum requirements for employment.
• Assist in the general maintenance and upkeep of the facility

Qualifications

Must be a currently enrolled USC Upstate student. Must participate in required training conducted by the Spartan Rec Center. Satisfactory completion of training provided by the Spartan Rec Staff. Current lifeguard certification document must be uploaded when completing the employment application.

• Current certification in Lifeguard Training ( ARC only)
• Must pass screening tests of basic lifeguarding skills and knowledge throughout the year
• Must pass the prerequisite swimming test when interviewed which consists of:
  1. Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 50 yards. – After swimming 50 yards, maintain your position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading using only your legs, floating, or a combination of both. – After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.
  2. You have 50 seconds to complete the following sequence (goggle not allowed). – Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. – Submerge to a depth of 4 to 7 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. – Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. – Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps
