Student Employee – Lifeguard

Location: USC Upstate, Spartanburg, SC.

Salary: $13–$16 per hour.

Part Time – 10 hours per week, flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and/or Head Lifeguard, enforce safety regulations for pool patrons, provide suggestions for new or updated regulations, assist in general maintenance and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Oversee lifeguarding programs at the facility, including recreational swimming, academic classes, swim team, swim club, and rec programs.
• Attend staff, departmental, or university employee training as assigned.
• Participate in certification or re-certification programs as needed to meet employment requirements.
• Assist in general maintenance and upkeep of the facility.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled student at USC Upstate.
• Participates in required training conducted by Spartan Rec Center; completes training satisfactorily.
• Current lifeguard certification document uploaded with application.
• Certifications: Lifeguard Training (ARC only); pass screening tests of basic lifeguarding skills and knowledge throughout the year.
• Pass prerequisite swimming test during interview (details:
  1. Jump into water, submerge, recover to surface, swim 50 yards, tread for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.
  2. Perform 50-second sequence: swim 20 yards, submerge 4-7 ft to retrieve 10-pound object, return to surface and swim 20 yards on back with object, exit water without ladder or steps.
