Role Description

The Lifeguard is a part-time, on-site role located in the Greater Madison Area within the Stoughton Area School District. This position is responsible for monitoring swimmers, maintaining a safe aquatic environment, and enforcing pool rules for students, staff, and community members. Daily tasks include supervising swim classes and open swim times, preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies, and providing basic first aid and CPR when needed. The Lifeguard will inspect safety equipment, report hazards, assist with pool setup and cleanup, and collaborate with physical education staff and coaches to support instructional and extracurricular aquatic programs.

Qualifications

• Current lifeguard certification (e.g., American Red Cross or equivalent) and valid CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
• Demonstrated ability to recognize and respond quickly to water-related emergencies, including strong swimming and rescue skills.
• Knowledge of pool safety standards, risk prevention practices, and proper use of aquatic safety equipment.
• Clear, calm communication skills for directing swimmers, collaborating with educators and coaches, and interacting with families.
• Ability to maintain focus for extended periods, remain alert in a busy environment, and uphold district safety policies consistently.
• Experience working with children and young people in educational, recreational, or athletic settings is preferred.
• Ability to pass required background checks and meet all district and state employment and safety requirements.
