The Lifeguard performs technically skilled duties of lifeguarding and provides instructional classes at the Bicentennial Park Pool located in Crystal River, Florida.
The schedule for this full-time position varies throughout the week and is located in the Bicentennial Pool, Crystal River, Florida.
- Maintains constant vigil over patrons and effectively rescues persons in danger. Performs routine lifeguard duties as needed.
- Enforces all policies and procedures set forth by the Division of Parks and Recreation.
- Assists with inventories/supplies for the pool, completes surveys and tracks visitors at buildings.
- Opens, closes, and secures assigned facility as directed.
- Performs weekly inspections of the pool.
- Assists with and promotes pool schedules, classes, and special events.
- Sets up and tears down pool equipment for activities and/or events.
- Monitors weather and swimming conditions and ensures facility cleanliness standards are met.
- Performs related duties as required.
Education, Training, and Experience- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Ability to successfully complete the required swim test:
- Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 350 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 200 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Prerequisite 2:Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
- Prerequisite 3:Complete an underwater swim:
- Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 – 7 feet of water. (Swim goggles are not allowed.)
- Resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards.
Certificates, Licenses, Registration, Skills- Valid Florida Driver License (or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida), or valid Florida Identification Card is acceptable only for positions not required to drive a county vehicle.
- Successful completion of Level II Background screening is required.
- Ability to work after normal business hours (may include nights, weekends, and holidays).
- Will provide trainingto obtain current Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Professional Rescuer.
- Excellent customer service skills, communication skills and strong attention to detail required.
- Must have ability to maintain accurate records.
- Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
- Must have strong working knowledge of computers and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of Products (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
- Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
- IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and
- IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
Physical Requirements/Work Environment- Requires a combination of sitting, standing, and walking.
- The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
- The job requires frequent bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, balancing, and occasional jumping, throwing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders.
- The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, and typing.
- The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
- The job may risk exposure to adverse weather, fumes and gases, electrical hazards, extreme noise, and bloodborne pathogens.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities- All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency.
