Job description

Life Underwriter

Job Summary

The Life Underwriter is responsible for the evaluation and assessment of underwriting risks across various products and product lines. This includes independent analysis of medical mortality risk, medical morbidity risk, and non-medical mortality and morbidity risk. In certain cases, financial justification will also require evaluation. Sound judgment is essential to ensure that decisions align with mortality assumptions and ultimately meet profitability targets. This role includes binding authority for decisions up to Table 6 and face amounts of $750,000 for all ages and lines of business. We are seeking candidates who have experience with life insurance underwriting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate insurance applications with the appropriate level of detail, within approval limits. The decision-making authority for this position includes cases up to Table 6 and $0–$750,000 face amounts for all ages and lines of business, depending on experience.

  • Review all underwriting requirements, including state-required forms and other necessary documents, to accurately assess applicant risk.

  • Analyze risks and determine whether to accept, modify, or decline applications based on an evaluation of medical history, physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest, and other relevant information.

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with the field force, vendors, reinsurers, colleagues, leadership, and internal business partners.

  • Provide timely and accurate updates to the Chief Underwriter regarding abnormal or negative trends observed during audits or reviews.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Analytical and Risk Assessment Skills: Demonstrated ability to make sound underwriting decisions by gathering and analyzing complex data and determining the most appropriate course of action based on the case details. Applicants should have demonstrated experience with underwriting in the life insurance industry.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills. This includes effectively conveying decisions to external field partners, maintaining thorough and accurate file documentation, and articulating underwriting decisions to internal stakeholders such as the Chief Underwriter, legal, and claims teams.

  • Collaboration and Continuous Learning: Receptive to feedback from more experienced underwriting team members. Actively seeks opportunities for professional growth through resources such as reinsurance webinars and industry conferences.

  • Innovation and Adaptability: Embraces innovation and demonstrates flexibility in adopting changes to underwriting processes and practices.

This is a hybrid role based from our downtown Kansas City office.
