Job summary

Winged Keel Group seeks a Life Insurance Underwriting Associate to manage underwriting and implementation processes, delivering proactive client service and negotiating with carriers. The role requires strong knowledge of underwriting, accurate case management, and collaboration with CRMs/PMs to drive timely policy issuance.

The ideal candidate will have 3–5 years in life insurance, solid communication skills, and experience using AI for project-based work.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of the life insurance underwriting process and terminology.
• 3-5 years’ experience in the life insurance industry preferred.
• Knowledge of broker-dealer licensing preferred.
• Experience using AI for project based work.
• Strong understanding of life insurance risk classifications.
• General medical knowledge (reading Attending Physician Statements).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills – written and verbal.
• Strong negotiating skills.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Proficient in Word and Excel.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a steep learning curve.
• Able to organize, prioritize and manage multiple tasks and requests.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while being pro-active.
• Highly detail oriented; exercises good judgement.

Responsibilities

• Provide regular case status updates to Client Relationship Managers and Project Managers.
• Ensure status updates are emailed to clients/advisors regularly.
• Confirm agent is contracted, licensed, and appointed.
• Conduct 15-30 minute telephone interviews to collect histories.
• Schedule medical exams and follow up to ensure completion.
• Coordinate ordering of APS records and review medical history.
• Negotiate with carrier underwriters for best risk classification.
• Understand how final offers affect case design and update accordingly.
• Complete and review life insurance application paperwork.
• Work with insurance company case managers to ensure timely processing and issuance.
• Prepare and send Portfolio Summaries after coverage is placed inforce.
• Breakdown underwriting files and inform Client Services of future obligations.
