Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is looking for a Security Supervisor to oversee the safety and security in a medium/maximum security facility. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in correctional work, including supervisory roles, and will be responsible for ensuring the proper monitoring of staff and inmates. A high school diploma is required, along with relevant experience or a degree in Criminal Justice. Successful completion of basic training is mandatory upon hiring.

Job description

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actionsof the security staff and oversees security, custody, and control ofinmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings andpublic property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensuresubordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, andthat cleanliness andOSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with allinmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations;arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.

Must successfully complete eight (8) week SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:
(Or an acceptable equivalency approved by the Division of State Human Resources).

• Three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.

• A degree in Criminal Justice or a related degree may substitute for Supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).

• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
