Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a Security Supervisor to plan, coordinate, and direct security staff and oversee inmate custody in a minimum-security facility. Under general supervision, you will assume primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.

You will conduct routine unit checks, assist with inmate counts, investigate complaints, arbitrate disputes, and serve as Shift Captain in the supervisor's absence.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor's degree may substitute for the required experience.
• Three years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including one year of supervisory experience.
• Certification by the SCDC Training Academy and completion of the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
• Acts as Shift Captain in his/her absence.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
