Description of Duties

Nurses are the largest group of health care providers within the staffed facilities, providing care 24 hours per day. As part of a comprehensive primary care team (nurses, medical providers, dental providers, behavioral health providers, administrative staff), Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses work in a collaborative environment providing ambulatory, emergency, mental health, and infirmary care.

Common activities include intake screening, identifying conditions requiring referral or treatment, administering medications, supporting other providers in clinic, and providing a wide range of treatments such as wound care, electrocardiograms, ear lavage, phlebotomy, nebulizer therapy, and tuberculosis skin tests.

Required Education And Experience
  • Graduate from a Vocational/Practical Nurse program approved by a State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.
  • Have a minimum of one‑year experience in a hospital, medical office, or outpatient clinical setting.
  • Experience in a detention/correctional or residential healthcare setting is preferred.
Required Licensure/Certification
  • Maintain a current, full, and unrestricted LVN/LPN license in the state of duty or a compact state that allows practice in the duty state.
  • This position does not require privileging.
  • Maintain BLS for Healthcare Providers® certification through the American Heart Association®.
  • Certified Correctional Health Professional or Certified Corrections Nurse credential is preferred.

  • Adapt to sudden changes in schedules and maintain flexibility in work requirements.
  • Communicate proficiently in English, both verbal and written.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Navigate an electronic work environment, including EHRs, web‑based training, and communications.
  • Moderate proficiency in common Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).
  • Knowledge of HIPAA/Privacy Act regulations regarding patient confidentiality and PII.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care within scope of practice and perform functions in accordance with current licensure, certification, and competency regulations.
  • Administer medications via all applicable routes.
  • Perform pre‑screening and intake screening of newly arrived patients using established tools; refer abnormal findings to appropriate providers.
  • Perform treatments such as wound care, vital sign checks, electrocardiograms, and other procedures as ordered.
  • Collect laboratory specimens, perform point‑of‑care testing, or prepare specimens for laboratory processing.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, provide emergency care, stabilize patients, and transfer to appropriate level of care.
  • Assist other health care professionals through data gathering, care provision, patient education, and related tasks.
  • May participate in involuntary, court‑ordered care.
Duty Hours / On‑call Requirements
  • The facility operates 24/7/365; this position requires response during emergency activations.
  • Availability for day, evening, and night shifts; weekends and holidays are also required.
  • On‑call availability is not required.
Physical Demands

Requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking or jogging over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching; or lifting moderately heavy patients or equipment.
