Duties & Responsibilities
Summary

The primary role of this position is to provide clinical andtechnical support for the veterinary care program of the Divisionof Animal Resources (DAR). Clinical support includes providingassistance to the staff veterinarians and research staff withsurgical or medical procedures or independently performing clinicalprocedures in consultation with the staff veterinarians. Thecandidate will perform daily health rounds, ensuring that all theanimals under his/her care are monitored to detect signs of illnessor distress. The veterinary technician will be responsible formaintaining animal health records and using the health observationsystem and/or phone to communicate with research staff about carerecommendations, follow-up treatment or actions. The candidate musthave knowledge and skills in administering and monitoringanesthesia; troubleshooting anesthetic complications and equipmentto actively participate in a rotating anesthesia technical servicesoffered. The prospective employee will collaboratively participatein leading small group hands-on training classes and veterinarysurgical observations. Veterinary observations require reading theapproved protocol and scheduling a time to assess the techniqueslisted to ensure they meet applicable veterinary standards of care.Other duties include managing delegated DAR-maintained spaces, suchas surgical suites, procedural spaces, the pharmacy, controlledsubstance logs, and equipment including scheduling, cleaning, andmaintenance. While the duties are performed primarily during normalbusiness hours Monday through Friday, the veterinary technicianwill participate in a rotating on-call weekend and holiday scheduleor assigned in advance based on the needs. The ideal candidate willhave excellent organizational skills and a basic understanding ofanimal research. In return, the department will provide training inall required techniques and foster a supportive workingenvironment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology orAssociate’s Degree in Applied Science in VeterinaryTechnology.
  • Must have current Veterinary Technician license in the state of Virginia.
  • Must have knowledge and skills in: humane handling of animals,recognition of signs of disease and distress across a wide varietyof species.
  • Knowledge of administration of medications, collection ofdiagnostic specimens (including blood), anesthesia administration,performance of aseptic clinical procedures and surgicalsupport.
  • Knowledge of performing radiographic techniques and basiclaboratory diagnostic procedures.
  • Ability to train and offer support to researchers and DAR carestaff.
  • Ability to listen and communicate professionally andeffectively in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Demonstrate experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member atVCU.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail whilecompleting tasks in an organized and timely manner.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of recent experience in clinical veterinarymedicine, referral, emergency, or specialty practice.
  • Experience working with exotics or in a research animalfacility.
  • American Association of Laboratory Animal Science certificationor willingness to obtain.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures set by the regulatory andaccrediting agencies.
