Job summary

Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (Part-Time) at Pocahontas State Correctional Center to deliver nursing care under supervision, screen sick calls, administer medications, and provide first aid and life support as needed. You will document in the medical record and coordinate with security and treatment staff to support treatment plans.

This wage position is limited to 1,500 hours per agency per year (May 1–April 30) with no state benefits and variable scheduling.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia LPN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license.
• Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care.
• Ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
• Ability to maintain documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and administer nursing care.
• Certified BLS for health care providers through AHA or ARC is required on hire.

Job Duties

LPNs provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Screens for sick call, administers medications, and provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed. Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan. Records all pertinent information into the medical record. Interacts with other departments as needed. Promotes continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing. Nurses must have the ability to work hours, days and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12 month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
• Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care
• Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
• Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
• Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Additional Considerations

• Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
• Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care
