Summary

The primary purpose of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is to perform assigned duties that promote quality healthcare, positive customer service, and maintain an environment committed to serving veterans.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in written and spoken English as per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
• Education: Graduate of an approved school of practical or vocational nursing, accredited by the NLNAC at the time of completion, or meeting military training and licensing requirements.
• Licensure: Active, full, current, and unrestricted licensure as an LPN in a U.S. state, territory, or district.
• Grade Levels: GS-03 (basic requirements), GS-04 (six months of experience or graduation from an approved school), GS-05 (ability to serve as a team member and administer medications), GS-06 (proficiency in providing patient care, recognizing emergencies, and supporting diagnostic procedures).

Physical Requirements

Visual acuity, hearing, speech clarity, manual dexterity, and ability to perform physical tasks such as walking, standing, and transferring patients. Exposure to infectious materials and potential behavioral challenges may occur.

Duties

• Perform basic nursing procedures including vital signs, treatments, and specimen collection.
• Document care and patient responses thoroughly.
• Assist with minor procedures, monitor patient during procedures, and ensure safety and comfort.
• Administer medications and vaccinations following standards of practice.
• Provide patient and family education based on individual health goals.
• Utilize specialized equipment and perform point-of-care testing as assigned.
• Work schedule is Monday to Friday, with specific shifts; telework is not available.
