Licensed Practical Nurse (Shared, 1:1, School Nurse's Office)

This position reports to the building principal, RN, teacher (if LPN is 1:1) or designee/School Health Manager. The ideal candidate will provide day‑to‑day support of students with disabilities or physical impairments and provide direct patient care in accordance with the Licensed Practical Nurse Practice Act of the State of Ohio.

Qualifications Profile

Certification/License

  • Current LPN Nursing License in the State of Ohio

Experience / Preferred Skills

  • Documented evidence of a minimum of 12 months experience as an LPN, preferably, working with children in an educational or other pediatric practice setting
  • Prior experience working with children desirable
Responsibilities

The successful candidate shall have the training, skills, and ability necessary to:

  • Communicate effectively, problem solve, and work independently.
  • Provide direct patient care demonstrating skills matching patient needs.
  • Plan and provide care based on daily assessment of the patient, Individual Education Plan (IEP), Individualized Health Plan (IHP), and/or physician’s orders.
  • Promote optimal patient wellness by assisting the patient to adapt to their illness or wellness state.
  • Report significant findings and changes in patient status to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain clinical records as required.
  • Maintain competency and enhance professional growth and commitment to interpersonal service toward patients, parents, administration, and co‑workers.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the RN.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, such as, but not limited to, providing back‑up medical assistance for students when needed; working with other students in the classroom as appropriate; assisting with assessments; entering and maintaining immunization records and vision and hearing screening.
  • Maintain competency and enhance professional growth and development through continuing education, and attending conferences and seminars.
  • If performing building health office responsibilities:
    • Maintenance of student records related to immunizations, chronic illness, etc.
    • Administer medications, document administration of medications, and obtain/maintain consents for administration of medication.
    • Coordinate/provide vision, dental, hearing, and BMI screening.
    • Document screening results and communicate failures to parents/guardians.
    • Document screening failure follow‑up/closures.
    • Perform diabetes care, which includes but is not limited to:
      • Checking blood glucose by finger stick.
      • Calibrating & cleaning blood glucose monitor.
      • Administering insulin per provider orders.
      • Obtaining all necessary paperwork to provide care.
      • Documenting care as directed by medical provider.
    • Perform First Aid using the Emergency Guidelines for Schools published by Ohio Department of Health.
    • Accurately document student encounters and maintain documentation per guidelines.
    • Stock and maintain health room.
    • Lifting of patient, equipment, or other items – up to 60 pounds independently, up to 250 pounds with 1 or 2 person assist/hydraulic lift.

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective computer skills as needed for work (e.g., ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite).
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Employment Provisions

Salary: $27.29 per hour – per the AFSCME contract.

Service Period: School year only – 7 hours per day.
