PURPOSE

The Columbia Public School District is accepting applications for an LPN to care for medically fragile students in the classroom setting. The LPN School Nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or reducing health-related barriers to learning of individual students and by promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation, management, and/or referral activities.
  • Serves as the direct link between physicians, families, and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care of students.
  • Provides relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, staff, and others concerning health-related issues.
  • Upholds professional standards, the state Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice.

Performs other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public School District.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports To: Director of Health Services and Building Administrator

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, LPN certification required; Missouri professional nurse license; Current certification in CPR/AED; Minimum two years’ experience required

Preferred: Private Duty experience preferred

Language: Read, comprehend, and produce written and oral instructions, correspondence, and memos; Communicate one-on-one and in small groups; Present information effectively and respond to questions; Demonstrate excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills; Demonstrate excellent listening skills. These are essential functions of the job.

Computation: Add, subtract multiply and divide using units of American money, weight, volume and distance; Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. These are essential functions of the job.

Reasoning: Solve a variety of problems in many different situations; Interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; Demonstrate executive functions such as planning, organizing, remembering, and regulating information and behavior as they pertain to student performance and achievement. These are essential functions of the job.

Other Skills and Abilities: Establish and maintain effective relationships with students and colleagues; Perform multiple tasks simultaneously; Safeguard medications and confidential medical information; Identify needs and abilities of individual children and adapt methods accordingly. These are essential functions of the job.

Technology: Perform basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use. These are essential functions of the job.

Physical Demands: Frequently stand, stoop, bend and kneel; Read handwritten or printed material; Frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds; Grasp, hold, and demonstrate finger dexterity; Reach and raise arms above shoulders and head; Must have both close and distance vision. These are essential functions of the job.

Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
