Job summary

Cullman City Schools is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the student health team. The LPN will administer medications, provide routine health services, and support Individualized Healthcare Plans for students across district schools.

This role requires Alabama LPN licensure, CPR/First Aid, and a valid driver’s license. Travel between sites is daily, with work across 12 months and varying hours to cover school health needs.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Administer daily medications, treatments, and procedures per physician orders and school guidelines.
  • Provide immediate first aid, emergency care, and triage for health incidents at school.
  • Assist Lead Nurse with IHPs and EAPs for students with chronic conditions.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student health logs and medical documentation (FERPA/HIPAA).
  • Support district-wide health screenings and infection control in health clinics.
  • Communicate health concerns with parents, administrators, and healthcare providers.
  • Travel daily between assigned school facilities to provide nursing coverage.

POSITION TITLE : Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
REPORTS TO: Lead Nurse / Student Services Coordinator
EVALUATION: State Approved Evaluation Program
DAYS/HOURS: 187 days worked over a 12-month period
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

Education & Credentials:
  • Diploma from an accredited Practical Nursing Program; required
  • Unencumbered Alabama Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license; required
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification; required
  • Valid drivers license and personal transportation for school to school travel; required.
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Pediatric, public health, or school-based nursing experience is preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills, proficiency in electronic health record keeping, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Administer daily medications, treatments, and specialized healthcare procedures (e.g., blood glucose monitoring, enteral feedings, catheterizations) as prescribed by physicians and authorized by school guidelines.
  • Provide immediate first aid, emergency care, and triage to students and staff during sudden illnesses, injuries, or health crises.
  • Assist the Lead Nurse in implementing Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, severe allergies, and seizure disorders.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and confidential student health logs, immunization records, and medical documentation in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA standards.
  • Support district-wide health screenings (vision, hearing, spinal) and assist in monitoring infection control and sanitation standards within health clinics.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, school administrators, faculty, and healthcare providers regarding student health concerns or changes in medical status.
  • Travel daily between assigned school facilities within the district to provide nursing coverage as needed.
Physical Demands:
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls.
  • Required to talk and hear clearly to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Position is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, and run to assist students and/or staff in emergency situations.
  • Position will occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds (medical equipment, student transfers, etc).
  • Specific vision abilities required include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Travel and Work Schedule:
  • Requires daily travel to multiple schools within the Cullman City School District
  • Occasional travel outside of the Cullman City School District for extra curricular activities, athletic events, or field trips.
  • Work days will be distributed throughout the 12-month calendar, including breaks and summer months, rather than a standard schedule.
  • Requires flexibility in days and hours to cover summer programs and other off-season duties scheduled throughout the year.

(Ala. Code §§ 16-22A-5) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Cullman City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by internal applicants by means of transfer.

Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial year of employment if hired after September 30.
