Job summary

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in Erie, PA seeks a Licensed Practical Nurse to provide compassionate care for retired Sisters, monitor health, administer medications, and maintain dignity and confidentiality in a supportive setting.

This on-site role requires evening shift, 3pm-11pm, 32-40 hours weekly, Monday to Friday with weekends and holidays as needed; prior experience with aging services and dementia is preferred, plus BLS.

Qualifications

• LPN license valid in the state of employment.
• Experience in aging services or gerontology preferred.
• Experience with individuals with dementia.
• Current basic life support (BLS) training.
• Strong nursing judgment and decision-making skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and respond effectively in crisis situations.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to train/motivate others.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and document vital signs, nutrition, weight, elimination patterns, and changes in condition.
• Administer medications and treatments according to nursing standards.
• Provide hands‑on nursing care while protecting privacy and dignity.
• Document care in medical records and report changes promptly to supervisors.
• Coordinate medical appointments, follow‑up care, and transfers as needed.
• Escort Sisters to appointments and procedures; assist as needed.
• Collaborate with Healthcare Coordinator and staff; provide direction when appropriate.
• Assist with staffing coverage and on‑call responsibilities.
• Follow infection control and safety procedures to maintain a safe environment.
• Identify and report safety concerns and supply needs promptly.

What You’ll Do

Monitor and document vital signs, nutrition, weight, elimination patterns, and changes in condition, responding appropriately to each Sister’s needs.

Administer medications and treatments according to professional nursing standards and prepare medications as required.

Provide hands‑on nursing care and assistance with activities of daily living while protecting each Sister’s privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.

Document care in medical records and promptly report changes in condition to the Healthcare Coordinator and Sister Life Ministers.

Coordinate medical appointments, follow‑up care, and hospital transfers, accompanying Sisters to appointments, testing, procedures, or emergency visits as needed.

Collaborate with the Healthcare Coordinator, Nurse Aides, and contract staff, providing direction and supervision as appropriate.

Assist with staffing coverage when needed and fulfill on‑call responsibilities as necessary.

Follow infection control, fire safety, and emergency procedures while helping maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment.

Identify and report safety concerns, equipment issues, and supply needs promptly.

Demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and professional communication while following established policies and community guidelines.

What You Bring

A current, valid LPN license in the state of employment.

Experience in aging services or gerontology, preferably in a healthcare setting.

Experience working with individuals with dementia.

Current basic life support training.

Strong nursing judgment, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.

The ability to maintain confidentiality and respond effectively in crisis situations.

Strong organizational, computer, and communication skills.

Demonstrated leadership abilities and the ability to build effective working relationships.

The ability to remain composed in stressful situations, work independently and collaboratively, and help train and motivate others.

Prior experience in a healthcare or religious organization is preferred.

An appreciation for the traditions and culture of the Sisters of Mercy and the Catholic Church is preferred, including familiarity with Catholic Church structures and teachings.
