Job summary

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a 3rd Class Power Plant Engineer to operate and maintain the Central Heating Plant equipment and systems. The role ensures safe, efficient plant operation and supports maintenance tasks as assigned to keep production reliable.

Responsibilities include shift operations, safety compliance, logs, minor repairs, chemical testing, and monitoring of gauges. Strong knowledge of power plant systems and MA licensure are required.

Qualifications

  • Must hold Third Class Stationary Engineer's License from MA DPS.
  • Must hold Grade 2-I full active Certificate of Competency from MA Board of Certification of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities.
  • Ability to read/write English and do basic math; high school diploma preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate Central Heating Plant shift operations under supervision.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures; maintain logs/records.
  • Perform basic electrical and mechanical inspections and minor repairs.
  • Conduct routine chemical testing and monitor gauges/meters.
  • Open/close valves and regulate flows; handle chemicals and fuel oil safely.
