Job Description

The Licensed Optician will assist patients in selecting eyeglass frames, lenses, and coatings that meet their needs. They will ensure lab technicians have accurate measurements and prescriptions for lens grinding, coating, and fitting. After glasses are made, the optician will dispense them to the patient.

Candidates must already be licensed as certified opticians.

Responsibilities

• Provide exceptional customer service
• Maintain knowledge of current sales, promotions, policies regarding payment, returns, and exchanges
• Process payments and refunds using the Point of Sale system
• Perform administrative tasks and process insurance claims
• Maintain up-to-date product knowledge
• Create and manage patient files following HIPAA policies
• Input customer data into the system
• Assess patient needs based on prescriptions, facial features, lifestyle, and occupation to recommend appropriate products
• Measure pupillary distance and other necessary measurements
• Prepare work orders for the lab with all relevant information
• Inspect finished glasses for accuracy and adjust to fit
• Educate patients on glasses care
• Adjust or repair damaged frames and replace parts as needed
• Price, stock, and straighten merchandise

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Experience in the optical industry and current state license

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to stand for long periods (up to 8 hours)
• Physical ability to stoop, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs
• Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills
• Proficiency with office equipment and computer systems
• Clear communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to interpret prescriptions accurately
• Strong multitasking, problem-solving, and time management skills
• Attention to detail and ability to handle stressful situations
• Ability to work effectively with team members

Work Environment

• Indoor retail store setting with high public interaction
• Fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment
• Use of manual tools such as screwdrivers and pliers
• Exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, and noise typical of optical labs
