Job summary

Griffey Eye Care in Virginia is hiring a Licensed Optician to provide professional optical services. You will interpret prescriptions, take measurements (PD, segment height, base curve), dispense eyewear, and adjust frames to ensure a precise, comfortable fit.

Candidates should hold a Virginia Optician license in good standing, have completed an accredited opticianry program, and bring experience with lens materials, progressive lenses, and insurance verification.

Qualifications

  • Virginia Optician license in good standing.
  • Graduate of an accredited opticianry program or equivalent qualifying education and experience.
  • Previous optical/optician experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of ophthalmic lenses, frames, measurements, adjustments, and optical dispensing.
  • Proficiency with optical equipment and computer systems.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret prescriptions written by ophthalmologists and optometrists.
  • Take accurate optical measurements, including pupillary distance, segment height, base curve, width, and thickness.
  • Assist patients in selecting appropriate frames based on facial structure, prescription, lifestyle, and personal preferences.
  • Educate patients on lens materials, progressive lenses, lens treatments, and other available optical options.
  • Recommend appropriate lens materials and treatments based on the patient\'s prescription and needs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve patient concerns related to vision and eyewear.
  • Neutralize and inspect prescription lenses for accuracy using a lensometer.
  • Identify wanted and unwanted prism according to the written prescription.
  • Verify insurance benefits and assist patients with understanding their optical benefits and costs.
  • Prepare and submit laboratory orders accurately to ensure proper lenses are produced.
  • Adjust eyeglasses to provide patients with a proper and comfortable fit.
  • Perform minor frame repairs when appropriate.
  • Educate patients on eyeglass and contact lens care.
  • Maintain accurate records of orders, prescriptions, and optical inventory.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional optical area.
  • Provide excellent customer service and contribute to a positive patient experience.

Job Summary

The Licensed Optician is responsible for providing patients with professional optical services, including interpreting prescriptions, taking measurements, assisting with frame and lens selection, dispensing eyewear, making adjustments and repairs, and ensuring a high level of patient satisfaction.

  • Knowledge of nonglare, polarized, and other lens treatments.
  • Knowledge of lens material options and their appropriate applications.
  • Ability to accurately measure, fit, adjust, and dispense eyewear.
  • Ability to use a lensometer and other optical equipment proficiently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

This position is performed in a professional eye care and optical office environment. The Licensed Optician will interact regularly with patients, providers, clinical staff, optical laboratories, and other team members. The position requires the ability to work efficiently while maintaining excellent patient service and attention to detail.

Physical Demands

The employee may be required to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Sit for periods of time.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and reach.
  • Use hands to handle tools, eyewear, and optical equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and team members.
  • Lift and move moderately heavy objects as needed.
  • Perform tasks requiring close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position .

Regular Schedule:
Monday through Friday
8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.

Occasional overtime may be required based on patient and business needs.

Occasional Travel may be required.

Required Education and Experience
  • Current Virginia Optician license in good standing.
  • Graduate of an accredited opticianry program or equivalent qualifying education and experience.
  • Previous optical/optician experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of ophthalmic lenses, frames, measurements, adjustments, and optical dispensing.
  • Proficiency with optical equipment and computer systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an ophthalmology, optometry, or medical optical practice.
  • Experience with insurance verification and optical benefits.
  • Experience with progressive and specialty lens products.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient care.
