About the Role
The Licensed Nursing Home Administrator is responsible for the overall leadership and day-to-day operations of the skilled nursing facility. The Administrator ensures the facility operates in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines while maintaining a strong focus on quality resident care, employee engagement, resident and family satisfaction, financial performance, and operational excellence.
The Administrator works closely with department leaders, physicians, residents, families, employees, governing leadership, and external agencies to ensure the facility consistently meets or exceeds expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Culture
- Provide strong, visible leadership for the facility and its interdisciplinary team.
- Foster a culture of compassion, accountability, teamwork, respect, and employee engagement.
- Create an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis for residents, families, and staff.
- Support department leaders in establishing goals, evaluating performance, addressing challenges, and improving services.
- Participate in the recruitment, selection, development, coaching, and retention of qualified leaders and staff.
- Address performance concerns and provide appropriate counseling and disciplinary action when necessary.
- Support ongoing employee education, orientation, competency, and professional development.
Clinical Quality & Resident Care
- Maintain a strong focus on quality of care, resident outcomes, safety, and quality improvement.
- Partner with the Director of Nursing and other department leaders to identify opportunities for improvement and implement effective action plans.
- Review accident and incident reports, including falls, injuries, abuse allegations, and other risk-management concerns, and monitor corrective actions.
- Ensure resident rights, dignity, privacy, individuality, self-determination, and equitable treatment are protected at all times.
- Respond to resident and family concerns and grievances and ensure timely follow-up and resolution.
- Promote strong communication among residents, families, physicians, staff, and leadership.
- Ensure physicians and medical providers comply with applicable facility policies and regulatory requirements.
Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness
- Ensure facility operations comply with applicable federal and state regulations, CMS requirements, and nursing facility standards.
- Lead and support the facility through regulatory surveys, inspections, and follow-up activities.
- Participate in daily leadership meetings during surveys and coordinate responses to survey findings.
- Assist in developing and implementing Plans of Correction and ensure corrective actions are sustained.
- Maintain ongoing survey readiness through effective monitoring, education, and accountability.
- Ensure compliance with safety, fire prevention, infection prevention and control, smoking, and other facility policies and regulations.
- Report suspected or known incidents of fraud or other regulatory concerns to the appropriate parties and agencies.
Operations & Financial Management
- Oversee the daily operations of the facility and ensure departments have the resources necessary to provide quality services.
- Review and interpret monthly financial statements and communicate financial performance to governing leadership.
- Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, and overall facility performance.
- Ensure appropriate management and accounting of resident funds in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Maintain a clean, safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
- Ensure appropriate equipment, supplies, and resources are available to support resident care and facility operations.
Communication & Community Relations
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with residents, families, employees, physicians, vendors, community partners, and regulatory agencies.
- Communicate facility policies, procedures, expectations, and regulatory requirements effectively to staff and other stakeholders.
- Serve as a visible and approachable leader for residents, families, and employees.
- Work collaboratively with regional leadership and other organizational resources to achieve facility goals.
Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Current, active, and unencumbered Nursing Home Administrator license.
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience; healthcare leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of nursing facility operations, reimbursement, regulatory requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Strong understanding of nursing practices, procedures, and skilled nursing facility operations.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound, independent decisions and exercise good judgment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand financial statements, reports, and operational data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, employees, physicians, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Public Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related healthcare field.
- Previous experience as a Nursing Home Administrator or in skilled nursing facility leadership.
- Experience with regulatory surveys, Plans of Correction, quality improvement, and facility performance management.
