Job summary

Glacier Fish Company in Washington seeks a seasoned ship operator to command the factory trawler crew and ensure safe, compliant operations under the Master’s direction.

You will navigate using charts and radar, supervise nightly fishing, maintain logs, and uphold safety and environmental policies across the vessel.

A valid Coast Guard license is required, along with experience aboard H&G vessels in Alaskan waters and proven leadership on deck.

Qualifications

  • Coast Guard License or Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessel license required: 1600 GRT on the Northern Glacier.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience fishing aboard H&G vessels in Alaskan waters.
  • Must be able to command and is responsible for the overall safe operation of the vessel and the conduct of its crew, under the direction of the Master.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe operation of the factory trawler and the entire vessel crew, under direction of the master.
  • Safely navigate and maneuver the vessel using navigational charts, standard navigational aids and electronic bridge equipment including plotters, radar, radios, depth finders and sonar. Ensures compliance with COLREGS and Coast Guard Commercial Fishing Vessel requirements.
  • Direct fishing operations at night using knowledge of fishing grounds and workload capacities of vessel and crew. Record daily activities in ship's log.
  • Overall responsibility for implementation and support of all company safety and environmental policies and procedures in accordance with the Safety Management System. Provide direct supervision of all medical and safety activities on board in person or by delegation to other ship officers.
  • Conduct safety drills and safety orientation, ensure compliance with all safety regulations and maintain related record keeping. Acts as Safety Officer onboard, prepares and maintains station bill details.
  • Complete and document Safety/Equipment checks monthly, order navigational publications, charts and update local notice to mariners.
  • Act as Fire Team Leader and coordinate fire drills.
