Job summary

YMCA of Greater Charlotte seeks a Licensed Afterschool Counselor to supervise licensed staff, oversee programs, and ensure licensing compliance at the assigned YMCA in Charlotte, NC. You will plan and lead structured activities across arts, sports, STEM, and enrichment while maintaining high safety standards.

The role requires strong interpersonal skills, emotional maturity, and leadership, with training in safety and child abuse prevention.

Qualifications

• Minimum 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 1 year of child care experience.
• Complete 20 hours of training annually in early childhood education.
• Complete Basic Safety Series and Child Abuse Prevention trainings on hire.
• Interest in working with children; emotional maturity and leadership.
• Ability to adapt to changing needs.
• Desire to learn and apply experiences as necessary.
• Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with participants, families, and staff.
• All YMCA team members must maintain safety and programming certifications per YMCA of Greater Charlotte.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and supervision to a team of licensed afterschool counselors, ensuring licensing and YMCA standards.
• Train, mentor, and support counselors for high-quality programming and licensing compliance.
• Oversee daily program operations, ensuring structured activities and proper supervision ratios.
• Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, sharing progress and addressing concerns.
• Resolve conflicts among children and staff using appropriate behavior management techniques.
• Ensure compliance with licensing regs, including documentation and safety protocols.
• Assist in planning and leading developmentally appropriate activities (arts, sports, STEM, enrichment).
• Monitor staff performance, provide coaching, and maintain current trainings/certifications.
• Foster an inclusive, nurturing environment where learning and social development thrive.
