Job Summary

The Certified Pharmacy Technician supports long-term care pharmacy operations in Illinois by assisting pharmacists with medication order processing, dispensing preparation, packaging, inventory management, records maintenance, automation support, delivery coordination, MTM process involvement, and other technical pharmacy functions. A technician who maintains active Illinois registration, active national pharmacy technician certification, documented PTCB Technician Product Verification training or employer-approved equivalent training, and site-specific competency validation may perform final product verification only for eligible prescriptions, medication orders, unit-dose items, compliance packaging, automation output, cart-fill items, cycle-fill items, or other products authorized by policy. Final product verification is limited to confirming technical accuracy, product-to-label match, quantity, dosage form, strength, packaging integrity, barcode accuracy, and required labeling. The technician may also assist pharmacists with MTM program workflow by identifying eligible residents or patients, gathering medication histories and adherence information, preparing documentation, coordinating outreach, tracking interventions, and supporting follow-up tasks as assigned. These activities do not replace pharmacist clinical review, pharmacist MTM assessment, pharmacist counseling, or pharmacist supervision.

Job Duties:
  • Perform final product verification for eligible products only when all required conditions are met, including active Illinois pharmacy technician registration, active national certification, documented PTCB Technician Product Verification training or employer-approved equivalent training, site-specific competency validation, pharmacist authorization, and compliance with Illinois law and company policy.
  • Verify prepared products for technical accuracy, including patient/resident name, medication name, strength, dosage form, quantity, route when applicable, directions as displayed on the label or order, lot number and expiration information when required, packaging integrity, auxiliary labeling, barcode information, and product-to-label match.
  • Check work prepared by another technician or generated by an approved automated dispensing, filling, packaging, or verification system, as permitted by law and policy.
  • Perform technical verification for unit-dose packaging, multidose or compliance packaging, cycle-fill medication, cart-fill medication, automated dispensing system replenishment, emergency medication supply preparation, returns processing, and other eligible long-term care dispensing workflows as assigned.
  • Do not perform final product verification on compounded preparations, investigational medications, medication orders requiring clinical clarification, products requiring pharmacist judgment, products outside the technician's validated competency, or any category excluded by law or pharmacy policy.
  • Escalate all discrepancies, unclear orders, product concerns, clinical questions, suspected therapeutic issues, controlled substance concerns, compounding issues, vaccine-related clinical questions, and any matter requiring professional judgment to a licensed pharmacist before release.
  • Support medication order entry, refill processing, label generation, packaging, cart fill, cycle fill, emergency box or automated dispensing system replenishment, delivery preparation, returns processing, and related long-term care pharmacy workflows as assigned.
  • Assist with sterile and non-sterile compounding only when appropriately trained, competency-validated, authorized by policy, and under pharmacist supervision; final product verification authority does not extend to compounded preparations unless expressly permitted by law and pharmacy policy.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of product verification, quality checks, exceptions, pharmacist escalations, training records, competency validation, and other required records.
  • Support MTM process workflows as assigned, including identifying potentially eligible residents or patients, preparing medication profiles, gathering medication history information, documenting adherence barriers reported by residents, caregivers, facilities, or prescribers, coordinating pharmacist review tasks, tracking pharmacist-identified interventions, and assisting with follow-up documentation.
  • Assist with MTM-related outreach and communication within authorized scope, including scheduling pharmacist consultations, requesting medication lists or clarification from facilities or prescribers, preparing patient-facing materials approved by a pharmacist, and routing all clinical questions or recommendations to the pharmacist.
  • Maintain MTM documentation and tracking records as assigned, including personal medication record support, medication action plan support, intervention tracking, referral tracking, adherence follow-up notes, quality measure support, and pharmacist review documentation, consistent with company policy and applicable payer or program requirements.
  • Assist with orientation, coaching, and training of pharmacy technicians on technical workflow, automation workflow, documentation expectations, inventory procedures, and quality standards within the technician's authorized scope.
  • Follow all applicable State of Illinois, federal, DEA, CMS, HIPAA, OSHA, Board of Pharmacy, accreditation, payer, and company requirements governing pharmacy operations, long-term care pharmacy services, controlled substances, confidentiality, documentation, medication dispensing, final product verification, and patient safety.
  • Follow company standards of practice, policies, procedures, and site-specific work instructions for order processing, dispensing support, product verification, quality assurance, documentation, and escalation to the pharmacist.
  • Assist in the initial submission, correction, and resubmission of third-party claims as assigned and within scope.
  • Assist in the checking of pharmacy inventory for outdates and processing all returns
  • Locating prescription files and other manual records from storage as needed
  • Prepare and file manual records for pharmacist signatures and review

  • Maintains and develops professional relationships with doctors and others in the health service professions
