Job summary

Grantsville City Library seeks a part-time Library Technician I to assist patrons with circulation, reference, and technology needs. You will help maintain collections, support programs, and ensure a welcoming, organized library environment.

Library Technician I
DEPARTMENT: Library
POSITION TYPE: Part-Time
REPORTS TO: Library Director
BENEFITS: This position does not qualify for benefits.
Overview:

Working under the direction of the Library Director, the Library Technician performs a variety of clerical, technical, customer service, and program-support duties necessary for the daily operation of the Grantsville City Library. The position assists patrons with circulation, reference and technology needs; maintains library collections and records; supports programs and outreach; and helps ensure library materials and facilities are organized, accessible, and welcoming. The Library Technician works closely with patrons of all ages and is expected to provide accurate, courteous, and professional service while following City and library policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
Patron Services & Circulation
  • Greets patrons, provides courteous assistance, and responds to routine questions regarding library services, resources, and policies.
  • Issues library cards and assists patrons with account, circulation, and borrowing needs.
  • Checks library materials in and out using the library circulation and cataloging system and assists with overdue or lost materials.
  • Assists patrons in locating books, reference materials, and other resources using the Dewey Decimal Classification System and other library tools.
  • Instructs and assists patrons with the appropriate use of public computers, Internet services, and other library technology.
Collection Maintenance & Technical Services
  • Shelves returned and repaired materials accurately by Dewey Decimal or alphabetical classification and maintains orderly collections.
  • Cleans, repairs, and protects books and other library materials using accepted library practices to extend their useful life.
  • Assists with cataloging and processing new books and materials as assigned.
  • Prepares and processes interlibrary loan requests and maintains accurate records of transactions.
  • Assists with collection review and the selection of materials for various collections and patron interests as directed.
Programs, Outreach & Public Relations
  • Assists with planning, organizing, promoting, and conducting library programs and activities for children and adults.
  • Coordinates or supports Children's Story Time, including arranging activities, presenters, publicity, and related materials.
  • Organizes and conducts library tours for children, classes, civic groups, and other community organizations as assigned.
  • Supports positive public relations and publicity activities and provides input regarding opportunities to improve library services.
Records, Reporting & Administrative Support
  • Assists with compiling circulation statistics and other data needed for monthly, annual, and special library reports.
  • Maintains accurate records related to circulation, interlibrary loans, programs, grants, receipts, and other assigned library activities.
  • Accurately collects and accounts for money received by the library and submits funds and required documentation in accordance with City procedures.
  • Maintains individual timekeeping records and submits required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Assists with grant and E-Rate applications, administration, recordkeeping, contracts, payments, and audit documentation as assigned.
  • Assists with monitoring library budgets, expenditures, deadlines, and other administrative requirements as assigned.
General Library Operations
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and welcoming library environment and helps protect library materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Works cooperatively with the Library Director, City staff, coworkers, community partners, and the public.
  • Follows City and library policies, procedures, schedules, and applicable program requirements.
  • Performs additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of basic library operations, circulation, cataloging, reference services, and related technology systems.
  • Provides courteous, professional customer service and communicates effectively with patrons of all ages.
  • Organizes work, follows written and verbal instructions, maintains accurate records, meets deadlines, and works independently within established procedures.
  • Performs basic mathematical calculations, handles cash and electronic transactions accurately, and maintains required records.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, community partners, and the public.
  • Adapts to changing assignments, learns new duties, exercises sound judgment, and remains professional under pressure.
  • Performs the physical requirements of the position, including standing for extended periods, bending, reaching, climbing ladders or stairs, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Works evenings, and weekends as required.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required.

Ability to type at least 40 words per minute with a high degree of accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two (2) years of library experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with library programming, interlibrary loans, grant administration, E-Rate, or related library services preferred.

Experience providing customer service in a library, educational, public-sector, or similar environment preferred.
