POSITION

Library Technician

HOURS: 7.5 hours per day

BUILDING: Scenic Middle School

CALENDAR: 184 days per year (August - June)

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS
  • $18.80- $22,60 depending upon approved accepted experience
  • Longevity pay after completion of 6 years of employment
  • Annual COLA pay increase (as negotiated with Oregon School Employees Association)
  • Annual step pay increase awarded to eligible employees

LIBRARY TECH
PURPOSE

The Library Tech supports student engagement with the school library by overseeing the facility's daily operations and guiding students in the proper utilization of its resources.

Nature of Work

The Library Tech works independently following standardized routines under general supervision. The nature of the work requires adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations. This job requires frequent interaction both with students and the general public and as such requires a high level of professional decorum as well as the ability to act as a role model for young people.

Interface

Primarily interfaces with students, administrators, teachers, non‑licensed school staff and visitors.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Oversees the daily operations of the school library.
  • Manages the library's collection, including inventory, purchasing, processing new book orders, repair of damaged materials, shelving and general organization.
  • Provides information to student groups related to basic library skills and procedures under the direction of the District Media Specialist, including computerized research techniques, book catalog searches and locating volumes on shelves
  • Supervises groups of students during designated library periods.
  • Oversees library circulation, including checking out materials to students and teachers, sorting and shelving returns, and utilizing computerized catalog system.
  • Maintains the library collection and facility in a neat and organized manner.
  • Assists students in identifying and selecting age‑appropriate reading materials.
  • Assists students in identifying and locating information in the library.
  • Provides basic library assistance to visitors.
  • Promotes the use of the library and the skill and love of reading.Coordinates library programming, including delivering and organizing book talks and overseeing school book fairs.
  • Proctors students' statewide assessments and assists in the logistical management.
  • Maintains effective and respectful working relationships with staff and students.

Working Conditions

The Library Tech works primarily indoors in a school environment. The position requires regular work at a computer, as well as the ability to write, hear and speak. The incumbent must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, kneel, reach and lift up to 50 pounds. Potential exposures may include blood‑borne pathogens and sick, injured or agitated students. The position requires high levels of interaction with children from diverse backgrounds, many of whom experience behavior, academic, or physiological challenges.
