Job summary

CSU Stanislaus University Library is seeking a temporary hourly-intermittent Student Assistant. The role focuses on welcoming patrons, assisting with Circulation Desk duties, shelving, and basic library operations to support a student-centered library environment.

The position requires enrollment in the specified unit thresholds and flexible hours, including weekends and late shifts. Start: Sept 14, 2026; end: May 31, 2027, with possible reappointment based on budget and performance.

Qualifications

• Undergrad students must be enrolled in at least 6 Fall/Spring units.
• Post-baccalaureate graduate students must be enrolled in at least 4 Fall/Spring units.
• Prior customer service or library experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist users at Circulation Desk, stacks, and study areas.
• Answer directional and service-related questions.
• Refer questions to librarians when appropriate.
• Monitor and report issues throughout the library.
• Retrieve returned materials from book drops.
• Shelve all types of library materials.
• Perform shelf-reading functions.
• Use library system to check materials in/out.
• Assist with opening/closing of library.
• Support outreach tabling as needed.
• Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Job Description/Duties

The Student Assistant plays an important role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and other library patrons. This is an excellent opportunity to develop valuable customer service, communication, teamwork, and organizational skills while contributing to a welcoming and student-centered library environment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Assist users at the Circulation Desk, in the book stacks, and in study areas.
• Answer directional and library service-related questions.
• Refer questions to librarians or staff when appropriate.
• Assist library staff in monitoring and reporting issues throughout the library.
• Retrieve returned materials from indoor and outdoor book drops.
• Shelve all types of library materials.
• Perform shelf-reading functions.
• Use the computerized library system to check materials in and out.
• Assist with opening and closing of library.
• Some outreach tabling activities may be requested on occasion.
• Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

• Must be available to work until 12am and/or weekends.
• Must be responsible/dependable and report to scheduled shifts on time.
• Demonstrated ability to use computer; type; alphabetize; take/follow directions from a supervisor.
• Must be able to interact with library users and remain alert at service desk(s).

Required Qualifications

• Undergraduate students must be registered/enrolled in a minimum of six (6) Fall/Spring units.
• Post-baccalaureate students in a graduate program must be registered in a minimum of four (4) Fall/Spring units

Salary Range

$16.90per hour.
