Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Director is responsible for staff and volunteer leadership, patron services, library programs and collections, administration, community engagement, facilities, and the continued development of library services.

This is a hands-on leadership position suited to someone who enjoys both leading people and getting things done. The Director should be organized, resourceful, community-minded, and committed to creating a welcoming library that responds to the changing needs of Medina and the surrounding area.

Reports to: Medina Community Library Board of Directors
Anticipated start date: March 2027, with a transition period alongside the current Director

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Administration

  • Lead the daily operations of the Library; supervise, schedule, train, and support staff and volunteers; and implement policies and priorities established by the Board.
  • Maintain required records, statistics, county reports, grant documentation, and other administrative information, while keeping the Board informed of significant needs, concerns, and developments.
  • Manage routine purchasing, supplies, vendors, petty cash, and other operational needs within approved budgets and procedures.

Patron & Library Services

  • Ensure patrons receive friendly, knowledgeable, and responsive service in a safe, organized, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
  • Remain actively involved in day-to-day service, assisting patrons with library resources, technology, computers, accounts, reservations, and other needs as appropriate.

Collections & Programs

  • Oversee the selection, ordering, organization, maintenance, and weeding of library materials to maintain a current and useful collection responsive to community interests.
  • Plan, coordinate, oversee, and continuously improve programs, educational opportunities, displays, and special events for all ages.

Community Engagement & Development

  • Serve as a visible and positive representative of the Library and build strong relationships with schools, community organizations, local government, donors, and other community partners.
  • Promote Library programs, services, events, and resources through appropriate communication channels and community outreach.
  • Identify grant and other funding opportunities; prepare or manage applications and reporting; and support fundraising, donor relationships, and resource development.

Technology, Facilities & Safety

  • Stay current with technology and how libraries and communities are using it; help patrons, staff, and volunteers use technology with confidence; and plan ahead so the Library’s technology and services keep pace with community needs.
  • Oversee the appearance, organization, maintenance, safety, and security of the Library, grounds, and related community-use facilities, coordinating repairs and vendors as needed.
  • Manage the Rodney Camp Pavilion and coordinate its use by nonprofit and other community groups, including scheduling rentals, communicating with users, coordinating setup and facility needs, and helping ensure the space is used responsibly and in accordance with Library policies.

Planning & Continuous Improvement

  • Work with the Board to advance the Library's mission and long-term goals while identifying practical opportunities to strengthen programs, services, collections, technology, and operating practices.
  • Stay informed about public-library practices and changing community needs, recommending improvements and new opportunities that are appropriate for Medina Community Library.

  • Annual salary: $45,000–$58,000
  • Paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, and paid professional development
Qualifications

  • At least 1–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong leadership, management, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, exercise sound judgment, and follow through on responsibilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, patrons, Board members, community partners, and the public.
  • Current technology skills, with the ability to learn and support library systems, help people of all comfort levels use technology with confidence, and plan ahead for the Library’s technology needs.
  • A strong commitment to public service, literacy, lifelong learning, community engagement, and creating a welcoming environment for patrons of all ages.
