Job description

The Board of Trustees of the Willett Free Library seeks an energetic, community-focused, and skilled librarian to serve as Library Director. The Director will lead library operations while ensuring effective, efficient, and welcoming public service for a community of approximately 1,920 residents.

This is a part time position, currently Monday - Friday from 1-6pm. Salary is hourly and commensurate with experience.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: September 11, 2026. Earlier applications will be given priority.

About us: the Willett Free Library is the smallest independent library in the smallest state! We are a cozy, welcoming library that serves a wonderful community. We were established in 1885 as a 'Circle for Mutual Improvement,' and we continue that legacy of lifelong learning by providing books, facilitating access to educational materials, and offering many enriching programs (over 700 times in the last calendar year!)

Working under the direction of the Board of Trustees, the Library Director must serve as both a collaborative team leader and an engaged team member. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent leadership, communication, public relations, and customer service skills, along with the ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative within the general policy framework established by the Board.

The Library Director is responsible for the overall administration and management of the library, including budget implementation, collection development, personnel management, building and grounds maintenance, services, programs, and community outreach. The ideal candidate will communicate effectively, demonstrate strong technology skills, and remain flexible as library services and community needs evolve.

The Director will also serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees to support consistent communication and informed decision-making.
