Job summary

Monroe County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Library Assistant to support circulation and services at a county library branch. The position assists library patrons, issues library cards, checks materials in and out, and helps users locate resources.

A Bachelor's degree is preferred and at least four years of related experience in a public library setting is desired. The role involves data entry, basic computer maintenance, and occasional supervision in the absence of senior staff.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with the public in the provision of public service.
• Assists with, and may lead all functions of, the Branch Circulation Desk, including issuing of library cards, checking in and out of library materials under the guidance of the Branch Manager, Librarian or Library Associate.
• Answers directional, informational, and reference questions of library patrons.
• Utilizes databases as needed to answer questions.
• Assists patrons in operating equipment as needed and in accessing available materials.
• Performs basic computer maintenance; maintains periodical materials and reference materials.
• Checks in and out library materials.
• Shelves new and returned library items.
• Compiles and produces monthly statistical usage reports, as requested.
• Initiates and handles special projects.
• Assists patrons with computers and locating requested materials.
• Aids in the training of new personnel and volunteers; provides ongoing direction on procedures.
• Processes interlibrary loan requests as needed.
• Assists with outreach and programming.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.
• In the event of special, emergency, or disaster situations, employee may be required to work schedules other than those for which they are regularly scheduled in any capacity deemed appropriate.
