Job summary

Duplin County Government's Wallace Library is seeking a Library Assistant I to support daily operations, assist patrons, and help with children's programming. This 40-hour-per-week role serves primarily at the Wallace Library branch, with flexibility to assist across branches as needed.

Responsibilities include greeting patrons, answering reference questions, assisting with computers and library services, handling materials, and processing transactions. Valid NC driver’s license is required.

The primary purpose of this position is to assist with the daily operations of the library providing customer service to patrons and library guests, and to support children’s programming. Additionally, promotes the general use of facilities and assists patrons in the use of collection and computers. This 40-hr position serves primarily in the Wallace Library branch. Effective date of this position is 7/1/2026.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves the public circulation desks at the main branch and assigned satellite branches
  • Answers reference questions involving resources in print and electronic formats in person, over the phone, and online
  • Provides assistance in the use of computer, fax, copier, and scanners
  • Provides Reader’s Advisory in person, over the phone, and online
  • Promotes in-person and online library services
  • Provides assistance in use of library online services
  • Uses technology to meet the needs of library users
  • Plans and executes book displays or displays showcasing themes, seasons, etc. in assigned satellite branch
  • Assists with Resource Sharing activities including retrieving materials, packaging and shipping
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products such as WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint to assist patrons
  • Assists with Children’s Programming events throughout the year
  • Participates in varied programming including evening and weekend hours when necessary
  • Processes materials including attaching barcodes, protective covers and spine labels
  • Inventories library collection materials as assigned
  • Perform accurate cash transactions for library services and maintain daily records
Financial and Budgeting Responsibility

Must be able to handle cash transactions efficiently and maintain accurate records of all transactions.

Marginal Functions

The Library Assistant I serves as the front-line contact for the public in any library branch. Services include book/material recommendations, check-in/out, assisting patrons with printing/copying/faxing and laminating services. Position requires computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and other operations for assisting patrons with varied digital literacy skills.

Special Requirements

All employees must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.All employees may be requested to perform other duties as assigned.All employees may be required to assist county operations during a State of Emergency, disaster or other county event.
