The City of Las Cruces Public Library is seeking an entry‑level Library Assistant to perform administrative office support, handle circulation tasks, and provide outstanding customer service to patrons.
Responsibilities include processing materials, shelving, cash handling, and supporting library programs. Strong communication, math, and data entry skills are needed; bilingual English/Spanish is desirable. Grade RN04 with potential for growth within the library system.
Performs administrative office support activities and provides customer service in the functional areas of circulation, collection and cataloging in the public library.
Work is performed in a library and office setting.
Light physical demands; mostly desk work. Must be able to lift and carry up to twenty (20) pounds of books and push a loaded book cart up and down ramp s. Frequent use of a personal computer.
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

This position is a grade RN04.
This is the entry level in the Library Assistant job series, as such employees at this level perform support duties and provide library customer services utilizing appropriate skills. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines.
Equivalent to a high school diploma plus one(1) year of customer service experience. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are desirable.
Dewey Decimal System of classification, machine readable cataloging (MARC) tagging, library cataloging conventions, and Library of Congress Subject Headings; principles, techniques and practices of effective and respectful customer service; current office practices and procedures; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; principles and practices of safe cash handling techniques; appropriate business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; business and personal computers, related software applications, and report generation; records management principles and record keeping practices; City organization, operations, policies and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
