Welcome researchers from UNM and around the world at the Access Desk for the Center for Southwest Research & Special Collections in Zimmerman Library. The Library Assistant works closely with CSWR staff to retrieve and shelve materials, answer routine and directional questions in person and by phone, perform clerical and customer service functions, conduct searches for missing items, process duplication projects (including scanning and digitizing), assist with archival processing, and support preservation efforts. The role may also involve assisting with research inquiries, training new student employees, and undertaking special projects.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to enjoy interacting with diverse populations. Good technical, organizational, and office skills. Ability to perform detailed tasks accurately, work independently, and apply archival policies. Interest in Southwest history and cultures. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
Knowledge of Southwestern and Latin American history, Library of Congress call numbers, archives or special collections, and experience with library or archival work. Ability to speak Spanish or a Native American language is beneficial but not required.
