Position Summary

Welcome researchers from UNM and around the world at the Access Desk for the Center for Southwest Research & Special Collections in Zimmerman Library. The Library Assistant works closely with CSWR staff to retrieve and shelve materials, answer routine questions, perform clerical and customer service functions, conduct searches for missing items, process duplication requests, and assist with digitization projects. The role may include assisting archivists with basic processing, preservation, and conservation of archival materials, following archival policies. Additional duties may involve basic research, training, supervising new student employees, and supporting special projects.

Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, with an enjoyment of interacting with diverse populations.
  • Good technical, organizational, and office skills.
  • Ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and independently.
  • Knowledge of archival and security policies, and interest in Southwest history and cultures.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Beneficial but not required: knowledge of Southwestern or Latin American history, Library of Congress call numbers, archives, or special collections; library or archival experience; Spanish or Native American language skills.
