Job summary

Floyd County Library in New Albany seeks an archivist to preserve, describe, and provide access to historical collections, maps, photographs, and oral histories through the Indiana History Room. The role manages archival databases, acquisitions, budgeting, and grants; requires MLS with archives specialization (or ACA cert) and 3–5 years of digitizing archives; supervisory experience.

  • Establish policies and procedures for Indiana History Room
  • Manage budgeting and purchasing of archival supplies
  • Apply for and administer grant funding for Indiana History Room
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work independently while handling sensitive material confidentially

Job description

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Full-time 40.0 hours per week

Primary Function: To preserve, catalog, and make library special collections and historic archives accessible to the community of New Albany and public at large.

ORGANIZATION-WIDE EXPECTATIONS
  • Follows established Library and personnel policy, procedures and work standards.
  • Attends work regularly, on time, and as scheduled.
  • Exhibits welcoming, helpful, positive and friendly behavior to all patrons, staff and guests at all times in all communications formats (verbal and non-verbal).
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Regularly monitors Library communication venues including, but not limited to employee email, staff bulletin boards, library social media outlets and the shared staff electronic storage locations.
  • Participates in meetings, conferences, continuing education, community engagement, and special projects as required by the Floyd County Library or as dictated by professional commitment.
  • Addresses, or assists in addressing, issues and concerns related to the safety of Library staff and users as well as the security and maintenance of Library buildings and equipment.
  • Actively assisting in the cleanliness and organization of service and work areas to assure an inviting public environment.
Job Specific Requirements
  • Manage arrangement, description, and access tools for archival records, including maps, photographs, oral histories, and family history records
  • Manage acquisitions and access of library’s historical collection of non-circulating books, paper files, and microfilm inventories
  • Manage and maintain archival databases, finding aids, and inventories
  • Provide reference services and internal/external requests related to Indiana History Room and its contents
  • Establish policies and procedures for the Indiana History Room
  • Manage budgeting and purchase of archival supplies
  • Apply for and administer grant funding as it applies to specific need/projects of the Indiana History Room
  • Other duties as assigned
  • ALA accredited MLS degree with specialization in archives administration or ACA certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience working/digitizing archives and special collections
  • Experience in providing library reference and basic genealogy assistance
  • Knowledge of current archival arrangement and description standards, including CONTENTdm
  • Knowledge of computer standards and applications in archives and libraries, including DACS, and digital imaging
  • Ability to work independently and manage sensitive material in a confidential and secure manner
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, attention to detail, excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills
