JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Madlyn L. Hanes Library at Penn State Harrisburg seeks a motivated and responsible individual to work part-time in the Access Services Department. This position provides evening and weekend service to students, faculty, staff, and residents of Pennsylvania. It is an excellent opportunity for someone returning to the workforce or seeking part-time employment in a collaborative and supportive campus environment.


Salary: $15.00 per hour.


Contract type: part-time. Working hours: 21 hours per week. Schedule: Two of the following three weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. On each of the two assigned days, the schedule is 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. During the summer and holiday breaks, the schedule will be adjusted to align with the library’s operating hours.


Responsibilities


  • Provide frontline customer service.

  • Answer directional, informational, and basic reference questions in person and by telephone.

  • Circulate library materials and technology.

  • Explain library policies and procedures to patrons.

  • Provide information about group study rooms and assist with reservations.

  • Collaborate with other departments to provide additional services.


Operational Duties


  • Open and close the library.

  • Manage undergraduate student assistants.

  • Assist with collecting unit statistics.

  • Respond to gate and panel alarms in accordance with established procedures.

  • Serve as the university contact for medical, building, and scheduling emergencies.

  • Perform collection maintenance tasks, including shelving returned materials, relocating library materials, and inventorying collections.

  • Assist with special projects.

The Madlyn L. Hanes Library houses more than 275,000 volumes, offers seating for approximately 1,100 users, and features nine classrooms, a Studio One audio and video recording space, 15 student group study rooms, more than 300 public access computers, two event spaces known as the Morrison Gallery, a 24/7 Lion Study Space, the Center for Holocaust and Jewish Studies, and the PA Center for Folklore.
