Job summary

Gloucester Township School District Erial Elementary School in Gloucester Township, NJ seeks a Librarian/Educational Media Specialist to provide a rich library program that supports student learning and inquiry. The position is 10 months/year and reports to the Principal.

Certification as a New Jersey School Librarian/Media Specialist is required or eligibility. The role includes cataloging, budgeting, and collaboration with teachers to maximize library resources for classroom instruction.

Qualifications

• Holds or is eligible for a New Jersey Certificate for the position of School Librarian or Media Specialist.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new library materials and equipment in light of the needs of staff and students and current trends for school media centers.
• Schedules and manages Library/Media Center Operations.
• Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
• Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials, and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
• Arranges for inter-library loan of materials on interest or use to teachers.
• Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of library resources.
• Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
• Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
• Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic, on the invitation of the teacher.
• Participates in faculty meetings.
• Counsels with and gives reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
• Arranges frequently changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the library’s patrons.
• Prepares and administers the library budget.
• Participates in professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
• Other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal within the scope of his/her employment and/or certification areas.

COMPENSATION: As negotiated by the Gloucester Township Education Association.

EVALUATION: Performance of the job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
