Job summary

SteelCon is seeking an experienced Level II Ultrasonic Shear Wave (UTSW) Technician to support nondestructive testing and inspection of welded steel components in a structural fabrication setting.

You will set up, calibrate, and operate ultrasonic testing equipment, interpret results, document findings, and help ensure weld quality and code compliance. Collaboration with production and quality teams is essential to maintain inspection integrity.

Qualifications

• Current Level II qualification/certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) with demonstrated shear-wave experience.
• Experience performing ultrasonic shear-wave examination of structural steel welds.
• Ability to read fabrication drawings, weld symbols, inspection plans, specifications and NDT procedures.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to document inspection results clearly.

SteelCon is Hiring – Level II UTSW Technician

SteelCon is seeking an experienced and quality-driven Level II Ultrasonic Shear Wave (UTSW) Technician to support nondestructive testing and inspection of welded steel components.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring weld quality, code compliance, and product integrity. We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, follows established procedures, communicates clearly with production and quality personnel, and understands that quality is never sacrificed for production.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform Ultrasonic Shear Wave Testing (UTSW) of welded steel components in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, written procedures, and customer requirements.
• Set up, calibrate, and operate ultrasonic testing equipment.
• Perform weld examinations and accurately identify, evaluate, and document relevant indications.
• Interpret UT results and determine acceptance or rejection in accordance with applicable acceptance criteria.
• Verify equipment calibration and maintain required inspection records.
• Prepare clear, complete, and accurate NDT inspection reports.
• Communicate inspection results and nonconforming conditions promptly to Quality and Production personnel.
• Maintain traceability of inspections and associated documentation.
• Follow SteelCon quality procedures, safety requirements, and established work instructions.
• Assist with investigation and verification of weld repairs when required.
• Work professionally with welders, supervisors, inspectors, and management to resolve quality issues without compromising inspection integrity.
• Maintain NDT equipment and ensure equipment is properly protected, stored, and ready for use.

Required Qualifications

Current Level II qualification/certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) with demonstrated shear-wave experience.

• Documented training and experience hours supporting Level II qualification.
• Experience performing ultrasonic shear-wave examination of structural steel welds.
• Ability to perform equipment calibration and system checks.
• Ability to interpret ultrasonic indications and evaluate weld discontinuities.
• Ability to read and understand fabrication drawings, weld symbols, inspection plans, specifications, and written NDT procedures.
• Strong understanding of weld discontinuities and welding-related defects.
• Ability to accurately complete inspection reports and maintain traceable quality records.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to inspection integrity.
• Ability to communicate professionally with Production, Quality, and Management.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing UTSW inspection in a structural steel fabrication environment.
• Experience working to AWS D1.1 requirements.
• Familiarity with structural welding processes and common weld discontinuities.
• Experience with UT inspection of complete-joint-penetration (CJP) groove welds.
• Additional NDT certifications or experience, including MT or PT, are a plus.
• Previous experience working within an ISO 9001 or similar quality management system is beneficial.

Work Environment

This position works primarily in a structural steel fabrication/manufacturing environment and may require standing, walking, climbing, bending, and accessing fabricated assemblies to perform inspections.

The technician must be comfortable working around welding and fabrication operations while following all required PPE and safety procedures.
