Job description

About the Role

XCEL NDT is hiring experienced Level II Radiographers (RT) for an aerospace casting inspection project in the Midwest. These are full radiographic roles — you’ll both shoot and interpret. Technicians will set up and perform radiographic exposures on aerospace castings, including aluminum and magnesium alloys, then read and disposition the film, working alongside a Responsible Level III and the customer’s quality team. We need people who can run the technique at the part and grade the film — strong candidates are comfortable on both sides of the operation.

What You’ll Do
Shooting (producing radiographs)
  • Set up and perform radiographic exposures on aerospace castings using X‑ray and gamma/isotope sources
  • Select and apply correct techniques, source‑to‑film distances, exposure parameters, and shot placement per work instructions and customer specifications
  • Handle radiation sources and equipment safely and in accordance with all radiation‑safety rules
  • Process film and verify radiograph quality, density, and sensitivity; reshoot as needed
  • Mark film with correct serial numbers and shooter identification
Interpreting (reading film)
  • Read and interpret radiographic film to identify defects in aerospace castings and mark for acceptance or rejection
  • Verify technique, identify discrepancies, and communicate corrections to the team and supervisor
  • Confirm serial numbers and shooter identification to ensure correct film‑to‑casting matching
  • Record and document inspection results per work instructions and the direction of the Responsible Level III
  • Recognize poor film quality and take corrective steps
  • Maintain accurate records to company and customer standards
Responsibilities (NDE Technician)
  • Perform calibrations, nondestructive tests, and evaluations for acceptance or rejection determinations according to written instructions and record results
  • Set up and calibrate equipment and interpret and evaluate results with respect to applicable codes, standards, and specifications
  • Exercise assigned responsibility for on‑the‑job training and guidance of Assistants and Level I Technicians
  • Organize and report results of NDT
  • Conduct tests to ensure quality or detect discontinuities using NDT methods of inspection
  • Establish techniques for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations
  • Apply testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications or standards and evaluate results
  • Interpret radiographs, cathode ray tube (CRT) or digital readouts, conductivity meters and visual indicators
  • Perform specialized inspections
  • May instruct and supervise others
Qualifications Required (Must‑Haves)
  • RT Level II certification (NAS‑410, SNT‑TC‑1A, or CP‑189)
  • Dual shooter cards — certified for both X‑ray and gamma/isotope radiography
  • Current State Radiation Safety card
  • Demonstrated ability to shoot and read film on castings
  • Willing and able to work 2nd and 3rd shift onsite, plus occasional overtime
  • Able to pass a background check and a pre‑employment physical
  • Able to pass the customer’s qualification testing — general, specific, and practical film grading — and certify to customer standards
  • Eligible to work in a CMMC 2.0 / controlled environment (U.S. person status may be required for this defense‑aerospace program)
Desired Competencies
  • Strong work ethic
  • Dependable, exceptional safety and quality awareness
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Adaptable to changing schedules
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Teamwork
  • Ability to follow directions and procedures
Work Conditions / Physical Requirements
  • Move, carry and lift objects in excess of 50 pounds
  • Climb and perform work from ladders, stairs and scaffolding in excess of 100 feet, continuously throughout shift
  • Be able to climb ladders and platforms up to 250 feet with a harness and lanyard
  • Be able to step up into vehicles or onto equipment
  • Work extended hours and stand for extended periods of time
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments in conditions of extreme heat and cold
  • Work in and near industrial hazards
Huge Pluses
  • Aerospace casting RT experience — especially aluminum and magnesium alloys (experience is a major advantage)
  • NAS‑410 certification and NAS‑410 experience
  • Additional NAS‑410 method certifications (PT, MT, UT)
  • Computed/Digital Radiography (CR/DR) experience
  • High volume of documented RT reading hours
  • Foundry or manufacturing inspection background
What XCEL Offers
  • Competitive compensation (DOE) plus per diem
  • Steady project work with a growing NDT services company
  • The chance to work on high‑value aerospace programs alongside experienced Level III leadership
