Job summary

SESLHD's St George Hospital seeks a dynamic Level 3 Social Worker for permanent full-time work in the Women’s and Children’s team. You will deliver holistic, person-centred care in obstetrics, neonatology and paediatrics, supporting patients through pregnancy and related safety planning.

The role requires a clinical social worker with at least 5 years’ field experience, strong leadership, and the ability to coordinate care with MDTs.

Qualifications

  • Qualified social worker with eligibility for AASW membership.
  • Extensive postgraduate clinical experience in Women’s and Children’s medicine, obstetrics, or neonatology.
  • Strong negotiation, advocacy and leadership skills; able to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced psychosocial assessment and intervention for pregnant patients and families.
  • Support complex discharge planning and risk assessments, including grief and bereavement care during pregnancy.
  • Collaborate with medical, nursing, and allied teams to ensure safe, integrated care delivery.
  • Provide clinical supervision and mentoring to junior social workers and students.
  • Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives and service evaluations.
  • Offer crisis interventions and participate in After Hours Crisis On-Call Social Work Service.

Join Our Compassionate and Skilled Social Work Team at St George Hospital. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Level 3 Social Worker to join our dedicated team in a permanent full-time role within the Women’s and Children’s team at St George Hospital.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a specialist clinical area, supporting patients with their pregnancy journey including safety and risk assessments and pregnancy loss. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering holistic, person-centred care as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the Obstetrics, Neonatology and Paediatric Service.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Previous experience working in Women’s and Children’s medicine or Paediatrics is desirable.
  • Providing advanced psychosocial assessment and intervention for patients and families who are pregnant.
  • Supporting complex discharge planning and case management for safety and risk assessments and grief and bereavement care during pregnancy.
  • Collaborating closely with medical, nursing, allied health, pastoral care and other external stakeholder teams (Police, DCJ, Child, Youth and Family teams) to ensure integrated care delivery and safety planning.
  • Offering clinical supervision and mentoring to junior social work staff and students.
  • Will need to be working as a clinical social worker for at least 5 years to be considered eligible to apply.

We are looking for a social worker who brings clinical expertise, emotional intelligence, and leadership skills, and who is passionate about advocating for vulnerable patients and supporting families through their pregnancy. Social Work staff at St George hospital have access to wellbeing activities and regular supervision and professional development opportunities to sustain professional growth and development. Staff are required to participate in the 24/7 afterhours crisis roster.

Selection Criteria
  • Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award and eligibility for membership of the AASW
  • Extensive post graduate clinical experience in relevant specialty area with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing clinical and professional learning
  • Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, throughout all organisational levels
  • Ability to provide in-depth advice and education to enhance service delivery and to guide and support others in providing service excellence, with the capacity to provide clinical supervision to other staff
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with situations of a novel, complex or critical nature
  • Ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise your own and team work requirements effectively within agreed time frames
  • Demonstrated experience in providing crisis interventions and the ability to participate in the After Hours Crisis On-Call Social Work Service.
