Job Summary

The Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for Intermittent Lecturer positions for the NewEngland Literature Program (NELP) in New Hampshire during the spring half-term of 2027 (exact dates below). These non-tenure track positionsconstitute 100% effort each and are to be appointed for one term onlywith the possibility of reappointment for future Spring half-terms.

Responsibilities*

This position requires instructors to collaborate to plan and teach a curriculum based on the literature, history, and culture of primarily 19 th and 20 th century New England. Much of that teaching takes place in non-traditional class spaces - on mountains, in the woods, in the rain, in the camp kitchen - and as a result takes on forms that differ from those usually encountered in more traditional classroom settings. This position also involves the teaching of creative writing, both in formal, workshop-style classes and inalternative writing groups that meet in a variety of settings. Instructors must feel comfortable leading small groups of students on multi-day hiking trips into New England's rugged backcountry. Intermittent Lecturers at NELP live on-site in rustic accommodations that may or maynot be furnished with heat and electricity. They are expected to participate fully in all aspects and activities of the program, which begins onMay 2,2027 with a week of planning and preparations before students arrive and endsJune 29 after a week of collaborative grading. Because of the compressed nature of the program's schedule and the fact that we are a residential learning community, instructors do not get weekends or days off during the program. Youcan learn more about NELP by visitingwww.lsa.umich.edu/nelp. NELP instructors will need to attend this year's curriculum-planning retreat in Michigan, February 26-28. NELP covers travel expenses to and from the Michigan retreat center, as well as food and lodging for the weekend.

Required Qualifications*

The candidate must hold a B.A. in English Language and Literatureor in another field with significant experience in literary studies or creativewriting; candidates with a Ph.D. or M.F.A. in English are preferred. The candidate should have demonstrated excellence in the teaching of writing and literature in the UnitedStates. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in
experiential and alternative education, a history of wilderness leadership, or experience with living-learning programs.Workon ecocriticism, alternative learning communities, and pedagogy is also of particular interest. The candidate must have, or commit to earning by the start of the program, a wilderness medicine certification, WFA or higher.
