Job description

Overview

The Legislative Assistant will foster the initiatives of the GAPP Group. Assist members of the group in monitoring and analyzing legislative, regulatory, and political developments for a variety of clients. Day-to-day tasks include researching public policy issues, covering congressional hearings, writing memos, arranging and coordinating meetings on the Hill, and attending meetings on the Hill.

Responsibilities
  • Draft cogent analyses of legislative, regulatory, and political developments;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of advocacy strategies;
  • Represent Steptoe and its clients at external meetings and events with minimal supervision or oversight;
  • Develop and foster relationships with policymakers and staff;
  • Correspond with clients and relevant parties;
  • Assist members of the GAPP group in monitoring and analyzing legislative, regulatory, and political developments for a wide variety of clients;
  • Produce legislative schedules and tracking materials, alerting other GAPP professionals about relevant committee meetings, floor activity, or legislative status updates;
  • Conduct policy research and prepare memos on key client issues;
  • Coordinate and attend meetings with congressional and agency officials and staff.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four-year college degree;
  • 1 - 3 years of related legislative or public policy experience (congressional or agency experience preferred).

Work Environment
  • Non-smoking;
  • Available to work in the office 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at a minimum two days per week;
  • Must be available to work beyond regular hours when needed;
  • Must be able to handle sensitive matters and maintain confidentiality;
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure;
  • Must be able to comply with all safety requirements in our workplace.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $55,000 - $75,000. The actual base salary offered will be dependent upon the applicant’s experience and qualifications, as well as other job-related factors, including but not limited to, relevant skills, education, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, geographic location.
