Job summary

IHMVCU is seeking a Legal Specialist to manage complex bankruptcy, garnishment and repossession cases from start to finish. The role requires close collaboration with attorneys, trustees and vendors to protect members and ensure compliance with applicable laws.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate independent judgment, strong communication skills and the ability to resolve time-sensitive matters while maintaining thorough documentation and audits.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework in business, finance or law preferred.
  • 3+ years in collections, legal recovery, or repossession services.
  • Expert understanding of FDCPA, bankruptcy laws and repossession regulations.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Experience coordinating with legal professionals, trustees and vendors.
  • Ability to analyze complex cases and act with compliance.
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful and capable of independent work on time-sensitive matters.

Responsibilities

  • Manage bankruptcy cases and deceased member accounts end-to-end.
  • File and track legal documents including Proofs of Claim and garnishments.
  • Coordinate repossessions, auction pricing, and collateral recovery with vendors.
  • Determine collateral disposition strategies and charge-off readiness.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel and Compliance for regulatory alignment.
  • Guide Collections Specialists on legal procedures and best practices.
  • Prepare monthly reports on charge-offs, legal filings and recovery efforts.
  • Maintain accurate records to support audits and ongoing compliance.

Summary Of Position

As a Legal Specialist, you will manage complex, high-risk accounts involving bankruptcies, deceased members, levies, garnishments, vehicle repossessions, and collateral recovery. You will review loan accounts, negotiate settlements, coordinate with attorneys, trustees, and vendors, and make informed decisions that protect both our members and the credit union.

This role is ideal for someone who uses sound independent judgment, communicates effectively, maintains thorough documentation, and enjoys resolving complex, time-sensitive situations.

The Successful Candidate Should Have Following Skills/qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in business, finance or law preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in collections, legal recovery, or repossession services
  • Expert understanding of FDCPA, bankruptcy laws and repossession regulations
  • Strong communication skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate repossessions, auction pricing, and collateral recovery with third-party vendors
  • Determine collateral disposition strategies and charge-off readiness
  • Partner with legal counsel and Compliance to ensure actions meet regulatory requirements
  • Guide Collections Specialists on legal procedures and best practices
  • Prepare monthly reports related to charge-offs, legal filings, and recovery efforts
  • Maintain accurate records to support audits and ongoing compliance

Salary: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
