Job summary

NetDocuments seeks a Legal Engineer to bridge legal practice, software development, and product management. The role partners with product, engineering, and design to evaluate and improve legal AI quality across NetDocuments’ systems.

The ideal candidate brings experience in legal practice with software or data workflows, plus a passion for trustworthy AI. You will shape evaluations, advise on legal accuracy, and prototype enhancements in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• JD, LLB, or equivalent legal qualification, or a Bachelor’s Degree plus 3+ years working directly in legal practice, knowledge management, or operations.
• Experience building executable software systems that work on legal data and improve legal workflows.
• Experience working with structured data and formats such as JSON, XML, and Markdown.
• Experience using agentic AI systems for legal and software development tasks.

Responsibilities

• Define what correct means for legal AI output and design trustworthy, repeatable evaluations and software tools.
• Contribute legal domain expertise to product teams through reviewing specs, prompts, taxonomies, and product copy for legal accuracy.
• Identify system improvements and prototype features to enhance legal quality and reliability.

Your opportunity for impact:

NetDocuments is seeking a Legal Engineer. This exciting new role sits at the intersection of legal practice, software development and product management. The Legal Engineering team will have primary responsibility for evaluating and improving the performance of NetDocuments’ systems and products on tasks that require legal knowledge for quality assurance. Legal Engineering is an enablement team serving our product teams, not external customers. Legal Engineers will not be “forward deployed.” Legal Engineers will partner with and advise product managers, engineering managers, and designers across the company. Legal Engineers will have responsibility for designing and implementing legal quality assurance evaluations and implementing platforms to support that work. Legal Engineers will also be tasked with discovering, proving, and recommending methods to improve legal quality in NetDocuments’ systems and allow our customers to get more value from their data.

This role reports to the Manager of Legal Engineering. The ideal candidate is a person with experience in some combination of legal practice, software development including coding agents, non-deterministic system evaluation, data set generation and curation, and who is inspired by the opportunity to make agentic legal AI both more reliable and more trustworthy.

What your contributions will be:

Legal Quality and Evaluation: Define what correct means for legal AI output and then design, build, and implement trustworthy, repeatable evaluations and software tools that allow our product teams to maximize legal quality.

Legal Domain Advice: Contribute your legal experience to the work of our product teams on an advisory basis. This might include reviewing specifications, prompts, taxonomies, and product copy for legal accuracy, or giving product teams a fast, credible answer to whether designs match how legal professionals think and work.

System Improvements: Find and prove out changes to existing systems that improve legal quality performance. This is a wide-ranging can be improving prompts, improving agentic workflows, or prototyping new features and new technologies.

What you will bring to the team:

• Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills
• The ability to speak law to technologists, and to speak technology to lawyers
• Demonstrated ability to manage time and prioritize projects to meet deadlines
• Strong attention to detail

Required Education and Experience

• JD, LLB, or equivalent legal qualification, or a Bachelor’s Degree plus 3+ years working directly in legal practice, legal knowledge management, or legal operations
• Experience building executable software systems that work on legal data and improve legal workflows
• Experience working with structured data and formats such as JSON, XML, and Markdown
• Experience using agentic AI systems for legal and software development tasks

Nice-to-Have Knowledge and Experience

• Experience with the evaluation of non-deterministic systems, including data curation and generation, grading, evaluation metrics and techniques
• Experience building and improving agentic workflows for legal tasks
• Knowledge of Computational Law techniques outside of machine learning
• Familiarity with harness development and AI-assisted software development lifecycle practices
• Full-stack software development experience

Compensation Transparency

The compensation range for this position is: $155,000 - $165,000

The posted cash compensation for this positionincludesontarget earnings, basesalaryandvariableif applicable. Some roles may qualify for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages aredeterminedbased onvarious factorsspecific to each candidate, such as career level, skills, experience, geographic location, qualifications, and other job-related considerations
